Pub Brew. Alter Spalter is true to the old world German style ale with a light brown color and pleasant nose. The malt character is low with soft, caramel notes and a unique banana-like sweetness. The beer is well balanced with a crisp clean nature and a lack of lingering malty flavors.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a slightly cloudy golden color with a light head. Aromas of citrus, grasses and malt. Taste has just the right amount of citrus bitterness. A very pleasant beer.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a murky brownish-orange with a cream colored head. Sweet aroma, of citrus, caramel, malt, apples, and yeast. Taste is crisp and bubbly, of grainy yeast, malt, and a bitter end. Lingering bitterness. Always nice to see an altbier and this one’s pretty tasty.

Draft at the brewpub. Cloudy orange-brown body, thin ring of off-white carbonation. Nose of caramel, toffee, and alcohol with light tannic leafy hops and hints of butterscotch. Sweet body with caramel, toffee, and alcohol; hints of butterscotch too; tangy with hints of metallic hops. Toasty. OK.

Draft sample. Poured clear light brown color with medium off-white head that mostly lasting with fair lacing. Aroma was toasted malt, fruit with a small grass hop tone. Moderate balanced flavor with a moderate bittersweet finish of average duration. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Good soft brew.
