COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anniversary Ale is a high-gravity wheat wine made with blood oranges. Flavors range from the spiciness of green peppercorns to the tang of blood orange zest. Aggressive dry hopping of Simcoe hops amplifies the citrus overtones and spiciness found throughout the beer. Anniversary Ale typifies Short’s Brewing Company by embodying all of the complexities that come along with another year of brewing.

Pours a deep red with a good head. The aroma is hops and oranges with some grapefruit. The blood orange flavor is pretty strong and the beer is plenty bitter with lots of citrus rind.

12oz courtesy of Desaparecido. Poured a hazy ruby red grapefruit color with a small head that had little retention or lace. Massive piney/resiny hop nose hints at what may be a sweet, sticky DIPA. Taste has perfume, blood orange spiciness and tartness, hop oils, lots of peppercorns coming through that at first hint at massive booziness/spicy alcohol but the body stays spicy and very dry with no warming alcohol even at near 12%. Very good.

Sampled on tap at the GTMW ’10 (Madison, WI). Pours a nice glowing fiery orange hue, a touch of haze but quite striking, glowing with a fiery purpose, a small whitish head dies to bubbles at the edges. Aromas are bigger malts and orange, peel and zest with some juiciness, a touch of spice. Caramel and toffee follow behind, wheat bread and the fruity esters associated with flaked wheat ensue. A medium body, surprised it isn’t bigger. The juiciness seems to make this go down quite easily. Small bitterness, a touch of mellow coriander linger with citrusy orange oils and faint bitterness in the finish. An interesting beer, I like the oranges en masse it offers, and it certainly goes down easy for being a fairly big beer.

(12oz bottle via trade with deyholla) clear rich orange with oily bubbles. Nose of spicy peppercorns, oranges, and other candied goodness. Taste of blood orange, juicy citrus, peppercorn, alcohol, Belgian yeast, floral. Great balance here, with a sweet fruity finish and long duration. Honestly loved this!

Tastes very sharp. I like it. This would be good with with a cheesecake. Nutmeg like a mug with peppercorns.

Sampled on tap at the MiBGF (Ypsilanti, MI). Definitely blood orange wheat wine, no doubt about that. Weird spicy chocolate. Very much blood orange tangy.

Bottled. Poured a very cool rusty blood orange color with a soft, tight-bubbled beige head. The aroma continued the blood orange theme, primarily led by the meat.. juicy citrus surrounded, and spicy pepper was more evident as it warmed up.. warm, but the sugars and spices kept it from feeling anywhere near 11.7%. The flavor was considerably less approachable (still good, but not what I hoped for).. orange meat and pale wheaty malts at the core, with tangy orange zest and lesser earth around.. really dried out in the end, and the peppercorns topped grainy sugars and alcohol warmth on the finish. Medium-plus bodied and kind of slick on the palate.. transitions through the mouth were only decent.. overall a complex and intriguing brew that wasn’t far from being great.

Shared by Sleestack on the RBSG Friday Bus. Thanks, Man! This is great. Beautiful orange-brown color with just a little lace. Huge, spicy, pepper and orange aroma with wheat. It’s tart, with great orange. You can really taste the pepper. Smooth, a beautiful beer. Love it!

12oz bottle from hoppymeal. Pours a shockingly clear reddish amber with a small wispy head that recedes to a tiny collar and leaves no lacing, just some sticky legs along the side. The aroma is fascinating and certainly has a dominant orange presence. Very thick and rindy orange aroma with sweet wheat and hints of spices and pepper. Still, it’s a massively sweet citrusy nose with the blood oranges bringing a completely new twist. The taste is seriously sweet as well but the tartness of the blood oranges and thick wheat presence seem to balance out the sweet citrus. The finish is bitter and burns with alcohol. Mouthfeel is sticky sweet and thick on the palate with low soft carbonation. I’m extremely pleased with this one and I really enjoyed what the blood oranges bring to the table. Big, complex brew. Not extremely drinkable but quite a sipper.
