3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle from hoppymeal.
Pours a shockingly clear reddish amber with a small wispy head that recedes to a tiny collar and leaves no lacing, just some sticky legs along the side.
The aroma is fascinating and certainly has a dominant orange presence. Very thick and rindy orange aroma with sweet wheat and hints of spices and pepper. Still, it’s a massively sweet citrusy nose with the blood oranges bringing a completely new twist.
The taste is seriously sweet as well but the tartness of the blood oranges and thick wheat presence seem to balance out the sweet citrus. The finish is bitter and burns with alcohol.
Mouthfeel is sticky sweet and thick on the palate with low soft carbonation.
I’m extremely pleased with this one and I really enjoyed what the blood oranges bring to the table. Big, complex brew. Not extremely drinkable but quite a sipper.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A very unique beer both in aroma & flavor, reminiscent of a raspberry lambic, but dry hopped. NOT a traditional barley wine. 12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Pours bright ruby orange/red, with no head. Smells of sweet berries and floral hops. Light bodied, with a thin texture, but an explosion of flavor: blood oranges, coriander, piny hops, spicy ground peppercorn? If not for the hoppy kick, my wife would love this beer (borderline fruity chic beer), however the orange-zest-peppercorn-hop combo will appeal to the hard core beer enthusiast. Very experimental, very good.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled on draft at the RBSG Grand Tasting. Dirty orange pour with barely any head. Aroma is pretty different, spice and sweetness, orange. One of the bras I was drinking with spouted off all the different stuff in this beer. It’s sweet, it’s got a spice zing, Lots of fruit. Slick palate. Pretty different, actually, and a cool place to start on the long drinking night that was the RBSG grand tasting.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle shared at RBSG by sleestak. Thanks! Pours a lightly hazy copper color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Spicy, peppery aroma deep orange notes, other citrus and toffee. The taste is big spicy pepper notes, tart orange notes and faint caramel. Medium-full bodied. A bit too tart but still quite nice.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at MBGSF 2010. Pours copper with an off-white head. Aroma is heavy on citrus and pine, seemingly from both hops and herbs. Flavor is again heavily citrusy, combining lemon zest and grapefruit, orange, pine, perhaps juniper berry? Bittersweet.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2010 the first time i rated this i couldn’t really remember it due to being too drunk when i had it. i revisited it tonight, and am lowering my rating very slightly... nice orange droplets at the very end of the pour, tons of floaties. big time citrus flavor going on. unique, as most short’s brews tend to be. worth a try, not there are better barley or wheat wines out there.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from pepsican. Thanks as always. Poured a clear garnet-orange color. The head was soapy and light tan with decent retention. Very hoppy aroma, ala orange and grapefruit. I suppose the blood orange also played a hand in that. There was also some alcohol reminiscent of a fruit liqueur. Whiffs of pepper and fat malty wheat wine emerged. Medium to full bodied and sweet in a fruit juice kind of way. Mild bitterness at the end. Distinct blood orange and fresh green citrusy hop flavors predominated, but there were also caramel and spice notes. Lots of action.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
12oz pour from bottle. Dark orange/brown almost red body with minimal head. Lots going on in the nose: orange, candy, alcohol, spicy, caramel, a little grassy...... Flavor equally complex with more orange, floral hops, sweet malt, spicy pepper.... Mouthfeel is a little shallow in my opinion. Initially sweet malt and orange, then finishing with slight pepper bite and perfectly balanced bitterness. Overall an outstanding and terrifically complex wheat wine.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle from my Secret Santa - thanks, deyholla! Darker pour than I’d expected given the wheatwine designation I suppose, but it certainly seemed appropriate given the ingredients. Huge and complex aroma, with blood orange coming across quite strongly along with some nice spice. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side, and some additional carbonation would have benefited this potent beer. But the flavors are really terrifice, with the dry bitters of the zest, a faintly nutty flavor, and intense pepper making this one another quirky but successful Shorts experiment.
