COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anniversary Ale is a high-gravity wheat wine made with blood oranges. Flavors range from the spiciness of green peppercorns to the tang of blood orange zest. Aggressive dry hopping of Simcoe hops amplifies the citrus overtones and spiciness found throughout the beer. Anniversary Ale typifies Short’s Brewing Company by embodying all of the complexities that come along with another year of brewing.

12oz bottle in a tulip. Pours amber/orange with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of oranges, a lot of caramel and wheat malts, a little spice, some light pepper, and floral hops. Flavor the same, with an interesting blend of everything. Smooth texture. A really interesting beer, but just too much going on.

GABF 09 Odd aroma wouldn’t have said orange, not bad, but different. Odd flavor intriguing, but a bit off lemon grass w/ some blood orange over a bit of alcohol. Not that good.

Bottle:   Brownish caramel, very thick, large frothy off-white head, splotchy lacing.   That is one zesty hop aroma, very citrusy.   Smells like sweetened orange rind, much like the stuff you might squeeze from the peel.   It actually smells a lot like ruby red grapefruit with sugar on it!   Very similar on the tongue, wow... that is interesting.   Hoppy, yet not biting.   This mainly seems just simply citrusy.   A little bubbley on the tongue, some fizziness.   Lingering citrus zest and sweetness.   Very odd.   Can’t detect the 11.7% ABV at all.   Drinks like its half that.   This is very interesting, champagne like in its effervesense.   Not sure what to make of it.   Entertaining, if a little too much like drinking a beery ruby red grapefruit.   Thanks for the freebie Kevin!

amber to garnet liquid pours out of the 12 oz bottle, apparently the 2010 version of the this ale. sweet and orangey, with no discernible hops and a hint of spice (evidently peppercorn). huge malt and sugar backbone obscure the 11.7% which isn’t particularly noticeable until the finish. an interesting beer, with a touch of wheaty starchiness that i feel it could do without. worth trying but probably only once...

Bottle. Pours a dark amber color with a thin white head. Heavy citrus aroma with some faint spices. Tastes like a weak screwdriver with some malts and hops mixed in. Very tangy finish with some lingering spices. Syrupy texture with average carbonation. The alcohol is hidden well in the flavor but there is some burn going down the pipes. Different for sure. Not something I would drink regularly but worth a try.

Draft at Churchkey. This was more hoppy than your usual barleywine, with decent citrus, grass and floral notes.

Bottle @ home via trade with FlandersNed. Pours lightly hazy rubied amber with a small, frothy and bubble off-white head, short retention with spare lacing. Aroma is blood orange, light citrus pith, black pepper, spicy alcohol, caramel, honey, and toasted malt. Flavor is sweet malt with a lightly tart citrus character, blood oranges, light pepper notes, spicy alcohol, and a dry finish. Full body and medium-light carbonation.

GABF 2009. Have to go against the crowd on this one and say it was a little odd for my tastes, and not really in a good way. Was looking forward to trying all Short’s stuff but came away a little disappointed. Orangish-amber color with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is loads of blood orange, spices, and pepper. Flavor is highly citric with a little too much tangy orange as well as earth, spices, lots of pepper, and wheat. Palate is somewhat astringent with medium body. Just a bit off in my opinion, but far from bad.

Sampled at GTMW 2010 - Pours reddish cola color with an off-white head. It’s already weird! Nose is lots of piney hops, with a weird milky smell. The blood oranges really come through in the taste, with lots of rind and juice, mixed with some chocolate notes and some floral finishing hops. Smooth and well-carbonated, but I’m not sure these flavors were meant to go together. As with most of the Shorts stuff I try, The description sounds better than the execution. But I love trying them!

Tastes like orange juice. Peppercorns are very subtle, but add a little bite.
