COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Anniversary Ale is a high-gravity wheat wine made with blood oranges. Flavors range from the spiciness of green peppercorns to the tang of blood orange zest. Aggressive dry hopping of Simcoe hops amplifies the citrus overtones and spiciness found throughout the beer. Anniversary Ale typifies Short’s Brewing Company by embodying all of the complexities that come along with another year of brewing.

GABF 2009. Have to go against the crowd on this one and say it was a little odd for my tastes, and not really in a good way. Was looking forward to trying all Short’s stuff but came away a little disappointed. Orangish-amber color with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is loads of blood orange, spices, and pepper. Flavor is highly citric with a little too much tangy orange as well as earth, spices, lots of pepper, and wheat. Palate is somewhat astringent with medium body. Just a bit off in my opinion, but far from bad.

Tastes like orange juice. Peppercorns are very subtle, but add a little bite.

Bottle. Aroma has that distinct aroma of citrus and energy drink. Deep red hue with a white head. Flavor is sweet and spicy. Palate is full bodied. Overall a decent brew but I was more surprised that it wasn’t infected since it came out of a Short’s bottle. To be honest it’s all I could focus on is whether or not the flavors were from infection or from the unique recipe.

Clear toasted orange with a small off-white head, fairly creamy, low retention. From a hand bottle from firmbuttstone. I definitely get the coriander and orange peel first in the aroma, followed by some spicy pepper. There is also some grapefruit rind going on, and a light tang. A little alcohol burns my nose. The flavor is a little more earthy (d/t the peppercorns, most likely) but still pretty well loaded with citrus and citrus peel (the latter more dominant). Not really all that sweet. Fairly fruity midway through to the finish, which was dry and peppery, some alcohol noted. Bitterness peaked at a 5. Low carbonation with a big full body. Not too bad--though it may have sounded slightly more interesting that what I though it actually was.

GABF 2011. Murky burnt orange, no head. Intriguing aroma of toffee and caramel malt, mild grassy bitterness, and some cream cheese icing. Flavor has some sweet funky toffee, mild grassy herbal bitterness, some light citrus fruit tones, a faint bit of floralness, balanced between sweet and bitter on a big-medium body. Nothing amazing, but well made.

Crushed at BSAF 10. Very sweet, citrus bite from the oranges, with the pepper coming through in the finish. Cool beer, but too sweet for me.

Poured into a snifter. Big thanks to northernbrews for this one. 3.5 A: Clear deep amber color. Half a finger of frothy cream colored head that recedes quickly and leaves one small patch of lacing. 4.0 S: No lack of citrus in this one. Lots of orange going on here along with the orange & cream lifesavers. Also some strawberry, neutral wheat, sugary candy canes, and a mild spiciness. Interesting, it really does smell like those creamsaver things. 3.5 T: Again, the orange creamsavers. This is okay, but I think it’s too orange heavy. I’d like a stronger toffee maltiness. Some grapefruit in there as well. While I’m on the topic, this has a reasonable bitterness and a stronger hop presence that I was expecting. Slightly tart and sweet in a candy way as opposed to a malty way. Alcohol is very well hidden. 3.0 M: Lighter medium body. The body is simply too damn light for a barleywine. I don’t like ultra thick and sweet Bwines, but I don’t like the other end of the spectrum either. Carbonation is a bit low as well. Otherwise very smooth with the smallest warming sensation on finish. 3.5 D: I like Short’s for their innovative brews. While they had a good idea here, it fell short due to the lack of maltiness (which is something I rarely suggest when considering barleywines). Still, it was worth the experience.
