kmweaver (2121), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Oct 1, 2008 12oz bottle. Pours a bright, mostly clear orange color; off-white head with patchy lacing. Medicinal oranges, dried orange peel, and light, sweet bourbon notes in the aroma; very relaxed bourbon character in the nose; muted hops; kind of sticky. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy, sticky, and astringent bourbon notes, rough hops, and sticky sweet maltiness at the core; not good, very sticky and messy, and hard to drink much of this; aged, misshapen barrel-aged IIPA. Limited presentation of the barrel, with an old IIPA forming the basis of things. Lengthy, sticky sweet finish: candy sugar, old hop bitterness, and sweet sticky maltiness; on the dry side at the far end. acrdz (4364), Boulder, Colorado, USA Sep 30, 2008 Updated: Oct 1, 2008Stinky hop fuel nose, some fusel orange cleaner, very sharp, stinky, fuel-like, ammonia-like... there’s got to be some chemicals in there. Up front there’s some vibrant sweetness and juiciness, but it quickly turns to maple coated dogfood and ammonia. Hugely sharp and putrid, heavily astringent. Difficult to like. Finishes like alcoholized dogfood. alexsdad06 (662), Ohio, USA Sep 12, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a fleeting small white head. The initial burst of aroma was almost candy like it was so sweet. After breathing a bit, the aroma settled into citrus, vegetal, oak, more mild sweetness, and alcohol. The flavor is big on the caramel and vegetal up front before giving way to vanilla, oak, alcohol, and citrus hops toward the finish. Seconds after the sip has disappeared, a more general bitterness becomes more prominent. The more I drink, I do get the mint that others have mentioned in their ratings. Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. drewbeerme (1839), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 4, 2008 12oz bottle. thanks to Kan for bringing this back from the brewery. pours hazy amber with white head. aroma of fusel alcohol, oak, sweet, and vegetal. flavor is vegetal, minty, touch of charred toasted oak, and sweet fusel alcohol notes. some sips went down easier than others and it started to grow on me but this is not a very good barrel aged IIPA. AgentSteve (831), SF Bay Area, California, USA Jul 30, 2008 Updated: Jul 31, 2008Pours caramel brown with a unique nose of oak, alcohol and very faint hops. The beer was a bit all over the place. Should have taken better notes.
