3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Taster on tap at GTMW. Hazy orange amber red color. Thin ring of off-white head. Leaves decent thicker bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of creamy crisp thicker texture to it, light slick, light drying in the finish. More grapefruit hop in the aroma than what I was expecting for an 8+% DIPA from 2006. A more fresh batch? Itís gotta be. Caramel taste. Moderate sweet. Light spiciness Lighter bitter. Some whiskey woodiness. Solid, tasty stuff to sip on. Malt forward, but a lot hoppier than expected for how old I should think it is. Impressive, in that way. Drinks like a decent mildly hoppy grapefruit barrel aged barleywine. I can deal with that.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Tap at Shortís. Pours very murky darkish orange color with a small head. Aroma has a bunch of oak-y bourbon in it. Some light citrus as well. Taste pretty hot and has a strong bourbon presence. Some oranges and grapefruit too. Too much bourbon and not hoppy enough.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the anniversary party. One of my bigger wants of the Anniversary ales. This one threw me a curve ball. Very strong. Huge whisky aroma and in the taste. Pretty much no grapefruit. One of my least favorite of the party.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap: The aroma consists of caramel, toffee, citrus, and faint grapefruit. Itís a mostly transparent amber with some grapefruit floaties. The flavor starts with caramel, toffee, and some citrus. The finish has moderate-heavy grapefruit, light bourbon, and vanilla. Itís medium bodied with minimal carbonation.

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Tap @ Shorts: The anniversary ale I expected to like the most was the one I liked the least. Chunks of grapefruit floating in the beer (that was a nice touch). Murky brown, looks like a barley wine. Smells & tastes like one, too. Hot booze, anise, licorice, sticky caramel, with a light, generic fruit backing. Plenty of bourbon, wood, & barrel aging present... Grapefruit isnít any more amplified than youíd get from typical American hops. This is the hottest & most bourbon forward of the anniversary ales, & it resembles an IPA in almost no way. It surprisingly gets a little more flavorful with warmth, but it also develops a mild solvent-y note that isnít too great. Minor letdown.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tasted 3/10/11. 12oz bottle. Mildly hazy honey amber hue. Bubbled tan head. Aromas of honey, grapefruit rind, with a touch of candy sugar. Full bodied with a bitter and tangy flavor. Definitely bitter and overtly grapefruit. Thereís a subtle cake candy sweetness. An odd flavor but definitely overt in the grapefruit aspect. The barrel aging is noticeable but mild. Still Nice though.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Huge thanks to Brad for this bottle which I thought Iíd never get to try. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip.
Pours a murky but bright orange that looks closer to caramel in the glass. Thereís a small thin white head that clings to the edges as a small collar.
The aroma is still massively fruity after all this time. Juicy, sweet grapefruits dominating. Maybe a little sugary sweetness and some orange zest. Oh, and a hefty bourbon aroma throughout.
The taste is more bitter than the aroma suggested with the grapefruit evolving from sweet to a more pithy bitterness. The finish is boozy with the bourbon burning in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation and very slick.
This one is a big bourbony DIPA that has a surprisingly big grapefruit presence still hanging on after 2+ years. Really enjoyed it.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle. The grapefruit hits the nose at first... so far so good. As I bring the glass closer, Iím smacked in the face with an intense fusel alcohol presence... I can only assume that the barreling produced this. Trying to look past the booziness, I get toffee malt, wet wood, very mild resinous hops along the lines of pine resin. Pours a nondescript muddy dark orange/brown with a thin film atop. Grapefruit, sticky malt and barrel on the tongue. Muddy flavors really donít blend well with each other. The alcohol is too distracting on the nose and the hops, malt and barrel really donít mesh well. Full bodied, bordering on sticky with a boozy and dry finish. While I applaud Joeís efforts and creativity, he took a big swing with this one and missed. Thanks Brian!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, sampled thanks to WeeHeavySD. Pours a hazy orange-amber with a white head. Rich aroma, of malt, citrus, hops, pine, and spice. Taste is sharp, of malt, grass, pine, wood, and grapefruit. Lingering sharpness. Odd, but very tasty.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber color with a small off white head. The aroma is sweetened grapefruit peel, caramel candy, and some alcohol. The flavor is more big grapefruit and citrus. It also has a large caramel malt component. Everything is thick, resiny, and smooth. The alcohol does show through with this, but doesnít distract from the overall. I also believe that some of the original bitterness has disapeared and this now has some barleywine like qualities. This was still very enjoyable.
