Aroma:Caramel, bourbon, sweet malt. It smells rich and inviting. Appearance:The beer is a dark caramel-brown color but not opaque. Low head and visible carbonation. Taste:Caramel, malt, dark fruits, and bourbon flavors stand out nicely in this beer. There is a very nice sweetness. Palate:The hot alcohol flavor stands out in this beer. The body is thick and syrupy. Low carbonation. Overall:I really enjoyed this bourbon barrel old ale, it’s got everything I look for, and then some.

out of the 12 oz bottle, it’s a dark viscous liquid. murky, woody brown color with a thin ring of light tan head; very few bubbles. sweet dark-and-dried fruits dominate, and other notes of red wine and molasses. overall a sweet brew with just a hint of greenish hops to offer a little contrast to the residual sugars. a nice brew, most enjoyable on a cold night.

Bottle: Burnt caramel color, nearly opaque. Looming, long-lasting ecru cap on top. Aroma of heavy fruit - apples, plums, raisins, figs - all coated in a bath of caramelized brown sugar & faint molasses. Lots of apparent, residual sweetness with a strong fruity essence leaning towards the dark side. Flavor is strongly sweet as well. Caramel apple, candied prunes, brown sugar coated dates, laced with anise, molasses, & sprinkled with some extra sugar for good measure. Toffee & dark fruit finish, sticky & residual. Despite the exceedingly high sweetness, I do enjoy the flavors more than I usually do for these types of beers. Not bad. Bourbon version is better, however.

Bottle pour to shaker. Cola-like color. Hints of malty vanilla, toffee and booziness, but thin finish.

At HopCat in East Lansing. Bourbon Aphasia. Pours dark amber, almost ruby, minimal head ring. Smell is very heavy on vanilla and cream with strong hints of bourbon present. Taste very boozy on the front. Fades to vanilla and cream, and a very bland finish. Proof that not everything is better barrel aged.

Bourbon barrel aged version. On tap at Short’s tap takeover at Churchkey in Washington DC, served in a snifter. Pours clear brandy with a small rim of bubbles and no head. The nose has fresh clean malts, along with delicate herbs. There is a hint of oak barrel, but it is very clean. The flavour is moderately sweet with malts, honey, grain and a touch of flowers. On the palate, it is medium in body with a silky smooth, syrupy texture. Overall, this is a decent strong ale, but the bourbon is not really apparent. 2012-06-09

On tap Birch & Barley Wash. DC. Pours a slightly cloudy caramel color with a small white foamy head that fades quickly. Aroma is rich, warm caramel malts with a slight woodiness and peat. Taste has some nutty malt and the essence of Bourbon and wood without the booziness. Light to medium body with low carbonation and very smooth.

Sampled at EBF. Pours a darkish brown color, think but not super thick. Aroma is a mix between vanilla and caramel, much of that comes through in the flavor as well. Definitely not boozy but a nice sipping beer.
