COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beard of Zeus is a super hoppy India style Pale Lager. We heavily hopped the final runnings of a Peaches and Créme batch with Zeus hops and then lagered it. Small amounts of bitter orange peel was added to provide subtle sweet flavors to the beer and enhance the aromas of the Zeus hops.

tectactoe (1524) - Michigan, USA - MAY 1, 2014
Bottle: Slightly hazy, golden-amber color with some burnt orange, capped with a bib-bubbled, soapy white foam. Jolt of heavy citrus peel & pine on the nose; subtle pineapple, grapefruit, pine needles, orange zest, white pepper, & brash hop oils. Battle of pine-y versus citric hops. No standout malt or yeast aroma to indicate that this is, in fact, a lager. This little fucker is deceivingly bitter, very brash & abrasive but in a quite dry & admirable way. Assertive pine, oil, faint ash, herbal white pepper, grapefruit rind & pineapple skin remnants. Bottle says "orange rind" & I definitely get orange in the back-end, but I get some of the juicy flesh flavor along with the rind. Thin bodied, perhaps a touch watery but carbonated nicely. Clean finish, aftertaste coating of orange, grapefruit, & lemon, *almost* like leftover Fruity Pebbles. Very nice little bugger, here, but I really don’t get any explicit lager qualities, save for the exceptionally clean finish.

12oz bottle share courtesy of BiiruBierBeer. It pours with a gold body that supports a near white head of foam. The aroma offers up rich notes that pulse with peach, lemon, tangelo, pine hops and lemon grass spiciness. Nice! The taste is similar with deep citrus and fruity hoppy goodness from ripe peach and tangelo as well as lemon grass, pine hop bitterness and grapefruit peel. Behind those notes is a modest sugar malt base. Cool brew.

Bought a single from the Blue Goat wine shop in TC. Poured in tulip glass. Pour is a orange/gold color with a slight haze. Nice half inch or so white head that lingers to an "oil spill appearance" on top. Aroma is citrus, grassy, piney, sweet, with a hint of grapefruit. Taste is a smooth, light, hoppy, bitterness that lingers slightly. You can taste some pine/ grassyness to it and is a clean, crisp, light finish

On draft at the GTMW2013 preparty. Pours a pale hazed yellow with a small white head. Orange peel and zest on the aroma, with notes of pine, tropical fruit, some floral notes as well. Flavor is bitter, focused on resin and pine hops. It’s light, dry, with maybe a touch of bready sweetness. Light bodied, spritzy carbonation. Finishes dry. Nice.

12oz Bottle. Thanks Sean! Pithy, citrusy nose, subdued and of rose stems. Flavors begin in a very mild manner, with soft herbal greenness, some gentle orange qualities, and some boozy, high floral tones, every so slightly Chinotto-like. I was hoping the bitter orange would translate this into something much more Campari-esque, but the bitterness is clean, green, and very sharp and pungent. A little odd, but then if it wasn’t, it wouldn’t be Shorts. The aroma and early flavor are very intoxicating and it’s super-flavorful for 4.5%, it’s just a bit harshly bitter.

A big fan of this one. And one of my favorites of the lager style. Even though this is one of those hoppy type lagers that may not be a true lager. A great beer nevertheless.

Bottled 5/3/13 and poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint on 5/17/13. Appearance: A very hazy yellow with about two fingers of a pretty creamy looking head. Dies down to one, and eventually a film. Lacing is very nice on it. Smell: Orange, piney hops, and not much else -- not that I mind. Very nice. Taste/feel: Eek. Alright, so this beer smelled great, so I was expecting a world-class sort of <5% ABV beer... hopes too high. Beard of Zeus is just tragically unbalanced. While there’s actually a noticeable malt profile in this beer (unlike what I got in Hopstache), it doesn’t seem to create much balance at all. Also much like Hopstache, Beard of Zeus is bitter from (mostly) beginning to end, and it lingers. I think this beer feels and drinks better than Hopstache (different styles of beer, I know... but I can’t help but compare), but it’s really unbalanced. I do love the aroma, look, and feel of this, but there’s not enough malt to cut the hop bitterness... much too bitter, at least at first, to be considered "refreshing", as well. On the plus side, once the beer warms up a bit, the malt flavor comes through a little bit more to cut some bitterness away. Additionally, the orange tastes seem to burst a bit more. This tastes much better after being out of the fridge for about 10-15 minutes... almost like an entirely different beer. Regardless of all of the negatives, definitely one of the better sub-5% ABV beers that I’ve ever tasted.

phaleslu (6287) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 20, 2013
Draft pour at GTMW 2013. Pours a clear orange-amber color with a small eggshell white head. Notes of citrus (orange and grapefruit mostly), florals, caramel, pine resin, and tropical fruits. Light-bodied, with a dry, hoppy, crisp, clean mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice change of pace. Good supper IPA.
