COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Beard of Zeus is a super hoppy India style Pale Lager. We heavily hopped the final runnings of a Peaches and Créme batch with Zeus hops and then lagered it. Small amounts of bitter orange peel was added to provide subtle sweet flavors to the beer and enhance the aromas of the Zeus hops.

A big fan of this one. And one of my favorites of the lager style. Even though this is one of those hoppy type lagers that may not be a true lager. A great beer nevertheless.

Aroma: citrus. App: brownish gold, thin white head. Taste: hops. Palate: a little thin. Overall: good, not great.

Bottled 5/3/13 and poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint on 5/17/13. Appearance: A very hazy yellow with about two fingers of a pretty creamy looking head. Dies down to one, and eventually a film. Lacing is very nice on it. Smell: Orange, piney hops, and not much else -- not that I mind. Very nice. Taste/feel: Eek. Alright, so this beer smelled great, so I was expecting a world-class sort of <5% ABV beer... hopes too high. Beard of Zeus is just tragically unbalanced. While there’s actually a noticeable malt profile in this beer (unlike what I got in Hopstache), it doesn’t seem to create much balance at all. Also much like Hopstache, Beard of Zeus is bitter from (mostly) beginning to end, and it lingers. I think this beer feels and drinks better than Hopstache (different styles of beer, I know... but I can’t help but compare), but it’s really unbalanced. I do love the aroma, look, and feel of this, but there’s not enough malt to cut the hop bitterness... much too bitter, at least at first, to be considered "refreshing", as well. On the plus side, once the beer warms up a bit, the malt flavor comes through a little bit more to cut some bitterness away. Additionally, the orange tastes seem to burst a bit more. This tastes much better after being out of the fridge for about 10-15 minutes... almost like an entirely different beer. Regardless of all of the negatives, definitely one of the better sub-5% ABV beers that I’ve ever tasted.

Draft pour at GTMW 2013. Pours a clear orange-amber color with a small eggshell white head. Notes of citrus (orange and grapefruit mostly), florals, caramel, pine resin, and tropical fruits. Light-bodied, with a dry, hoppy, crisp, clean mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Nice change of pace. Good supper IPA.

Draft on tap at The Beer Spot GTMW Eve Event at Brickhouse (Madison, WI). Pours a nice amber orange hue, mellow haze, with frothy offwhite head atop. Mellow ring laces ok. Aromas are decent grapefruit, bit of lemon and florals. A small bready element. Dry, small, firmly hoppy. Initial is firmy bitter, dry and grapefruit ridden. Firmly dry, bitter, a bit resiny as we move on. Grapefruit juice, rind, some lemon, touch of guava. Firm juiciness. Dry middle and backed show some firm dry and resiny qualities. Bitter, dryuu. Backend is dry, bitter. Small malt body meets richly grapefruit bitter presence. Firm hop, dryness. Nice beer.

Draft sample at MBGSF 2013. Poured a clear copper color with an average frothy white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sour citrus and earthy aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

Bottle. Murky, light golden color with a very thin white head. Sweet citrus and sourdough aroma. Flavor is too one dimensional, watery lager with a dry, soapy finish. Maybe I’m expecting too much from this brewer but I wasn’t a fan of this one.

Bottle pour to shaker. Another decent IPA from Shorts. Extra bitter palate, but light on hoppiness. Great taste for a low ABV.

Bottle to pint (thanks mikem409). Looks good for the style; a transparent orange with foamy white head that dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; hoppy with a lagerish backbone (and a bit of dough). Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Enjoyable.
