Pub Brew. Black Chai is a sumptuous black ale that immediately entices the senses with aromas of dark specialty malts, cardamon, nutmeg, and ginger. The brew has a delicious creamy mouthfeel. Chocolate and roasted malt characteristics resonate throughout this black ale. The finish is playfully spicy and bitter.

Draft at The Oak. Pours black with a big creamy head that fades slowly and leaves some soapy lacing. Aromas are dark roast, chai spices (vanilla, ginger, clove, cinnamon, and others), and grassy/herbal hops. Taste is an oddly spiced, dark roasty beer. Almost no sweetness and a moderate bitterness. Fairly big grassy hop bite in the finish. Overall I’m disappointed. The roast and bitterness don’t mix well with the spices and it’s overly hopped.

UPDATED: APR 18, 2014 Tap: Black, as the name suggests, topped with an off-khaki foam that recedes to a chunky collar pretty quickly. Aroma has notes of ginger, light cocoa dust, mint, nutmeg, & perhaps some vanilla spice? Smells like a pumpkin spiced beer with dark malts, heaviest hand on the ginger of all the spices. Slightly muddled. Taste is similar; dark pumpkin beer. The spices are there; ginger & nutmeg for sure, perhaps some suggested clove. Not sure if these are a product of the "chai" added, or if these spices are actually in the beer. Light cocoa dust & a solid woodsy, roasted backbone from the dark malt. There’s actually a substantial hop bite in this one as well; slightly herbal & mostly leafy... A nice, offsetting bitterness. A unique brew, seemingly almost a holiday/pumpkin brew, but a nice one nonetheless.

On tap at the brewpub. Black/brown pour with a minimal tan head. Taste and aroma of dark roasted malts with hints of chocolate and chai. Solid Black ipa.

8/11/12. GTMW. Dark brown pour with a nice enough khaki head. Plenty of hop notes on the aroma - floral and citrusy - with roasted malts, chocolate, and maybe a dash of tea. More of a black IPA aspect to the flavor as well - hoppy with roasted malts, etc. I was really hoping for more of a chai aspect, but it just wasn’t there enough for me. Besides that, it was tasty.

Draft at Short’s. Deep opaque brown/black body, thin cream head. Nose of chai; spicy and bitter with lots of anise. Spicy body with strong anise, slick and oily. Good heft and mouthfeel.

Draft pour on tap at GTMW 2012 (Madison, WI). Pours a rich blackish pour, near opaque, touch of glow, with frothy light brown head. Decent ring laces ok. Aromas are black tea, black malts, a touch roasty, with some cocoa, dry floral and citrusy hops. Initial is dry and more black IPA, dry florals and touches of grapefruit, medium hopping up front moving into some mellow sweet and darker malts, bigger dry finish offers life. Black and earthy tea, bigger hops. Unique take on a Black IPA, tasty hops and good flavors. More toasty and cocoa laced nose as the hops really come into play fairly strong in the beer itself. Nice.
