COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
• A sagacious formula of inherent elements within a beautiful cold fermented darkness
• Beer Type: High Gravity American Dark Lager aged on anise seed, Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans and fresh chocolate mint leaves

Black Licorice Lager has flavors of chocolate and roasted malt that complement the additions of Madagascar vanilla bean, anise, and fresh chocolate mint. Vanilla aromas greet the nose and flavors of vanilla and anise are detected. When the beer warms a bit, the finish showcases the crisp, sweet chocolate mint flavors. This well balanced beer is a bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Beer Cup.

Having read everyone’s review of this beer I rushed to buy a 6-pack and...was very underwhelmed. I don’t know what possessed the brewery to call this "licorice" as I tasted none. My overall impression was it was a chocolate mint, and the chocolate was bitter. I can’t advise anyone to pay for this beer unless you’re easily satisfied. Sorry...

UPDATED: JUN 20, 2014 Bottle: Thanks, Jeff! Deep black body with hints if ruby & a chunky, big bubbled khaki head. Aroma is like a York Peppermint Patty or mint chocolate chip ice cream. Mint, chocolate, light roast, & mild vanilla. Taste contains a more dark fruit character; plum & red grape with a mild tartness. Light anise & a good mix of cocoa, mint, & vanilla. Faintly tart & lightly sweet finish... I really enjoy this stuff.

The commercial description pretty much nails it...both in taste and on the nose. Not much more to be said, other than the mint comes through a bit stronger than the anise...but not to detract from the point of the brew. Good stuff IMO

Pours a deep mahogany/black with about a finger of fizzy white head. Nose is straight up black licorice. Taste is of mint, licorice, a bit of sage. This beer is weird & I’m pretty sure the good people of Shorts were wasted when they dreamed it up. Very tart finish. Weird weird weird. It was worth the $1.99 I paid for the single bottle, but you’d be insane to grab a 6er IMO.

Opaque dark brown beer. Crisp palate with decent carbonation. Smooth dark malt with a very slight touch of yeasty marmite. The vanilla sweetness is there as is a little chocolate. The mint is subtle but adds coolness and smoothness. Licorice arrives at the back of the tongue near the finish. A very finely crafted and inventive dark lager. Joe Short is a true master brewer!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottling date. Pours hazy very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense tan head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big chocolate, mint leaves, licorice, vanilla, molasses, roasted malt, biscuit, dark fruit, and a bit of bourbon. Nice and very interesting aromas as I would have expected. Taste of big chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee, licorice, bourbon, vanilla, biscuit, mint leaves, dark fruit, and some herbal spiciness. Some light licorice tartness on the finish; with some lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, mint, and licorice on the finish for a bit. Finish is fairly dry. Very nice overall balance of flavors, with no cloying at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel. Very smooth to drink at 8%. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming on the finish. Overall this is a surprisingly nice and interesting black lager; that is very drinkable and balanced.

(Bottle) Pours near black. The aroma holds sweet liquorice up front with some roasted malt, sweet vanilla and mint in the background. Bit salty and almost medical. The flavour is near medium sweet and near medium bitter with notes of chocolate and liquorice. Undertones of vanilla, mint, gingerbread and roast. The mouthfeel is soft with a light astringent finish. Lingering bitterness. Medium bodied.

A - Pours a dark black color with some brown around the edges and a thin covering of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some light lace. S - Aroma is a mix of roasted sweet chocolate malts with some anise, bourbon, vanilla, and mint. Really nice and complex nose. T - Starts out with a mix of sweet roasted chocolate malts with some mint and anise in the background. Through the middle, some vanilla and bourbon come through alongside some more mint and a touch of burnt malt. The finish is a mix of sweet roasted chocolate, anise, vanilla, and a hint of bourbon booze. M - Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a warming dry finish. D - Very drinkable. Really big an bold flavors, but they come together really nicely and taste balanced. I really like the vanilla been and anise combination.

UPDATED: MAY 15, 2012 I was getting mostly the mint here, the concoction tasted off. Lager body. Rather ordinary.Stephen’s bottle. Rerated FlandersNed’s bottle 4 months later and much better, understated carbonation, plesant licorice and mint.
