I belive this was brought to DLD by one of the nefarious Northside Gang. Most likely <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=48275>pantanap, who refuses to be normal in any sense of the word. Thanks, Kan.
But I had a hard time with this one. To me, the name says it all. It looks like a Schwarzbier, but it smells of black licorice. Period. There’s an element of a rye-like peppery spiciness to the flavor, but it’s overshadowed, NAY!, overwhelmed by the strong licorice taste. It took me quite a while at the The LoSBD table eating spicy munchies to clear my delicate palate before I could continue with my beer tastings. Given all that, the sun had just ducked behind some clouds (again!) and the wind was picking up (once more!), so I appreciated the sturdy ABV.

Props for one of the coolest bottle labels. I can’t really add much that hasn’t already been said. The flavor here is an earthy anise with a mint tinge. Agree with those reporting it is reminiscent of root beer. Pretty smooth throughout.

bottle @Noogfest4.0-thanks heemer77–pours a tan head and black color. Aroma is licorice-sweet dark malt/oat. Taste is licorice/root beer, sweet dark malt/oat, a bit thin, secondary/faint hops.

Appearance: Pours a near black body with a small, fizzy, khaki-colored head. Smell: Aroma jam-packed with distinct-smelling black licorice and lesser notes of chocolate, roast, spearmint, and a vague fruitiness. Taste: Sweetish black licorice flavor is quite heavy, with a lesser taste of semi-sweet chocolate. Slight hint of roasted malt. Tiny taste of chopped mint leaves. Thin measure of fruitiness. Lightly roasty finish with a lingering taste of root beer. All of the flavors and tastes combine beautifully to present a taste truly reminiscent of root beer. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Recommended. The best root beer I’ve had in a coon’s age. Yet another wonderful creation by Short’s Brewing.

Let me preface this rating with two statements. First, I really like Shorts. Second, I absolutely love black licorice and anise flavors. The body was black colored, looked almost like a schwarzbier with a khaki head. The aroma was obvious with tosn of licorice and some cola. There was also some woody charater. The taste was more black licorice with some roast notes and coffee. Excellent, but you need ot like black licorice, otherwise you will hate this one.

Tasted at Noogfest 4.0 (2008). This spiced ale pours a dark black color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is licorice, malt and grain, but mostly licorice. A medium bodied ale. The malts are caramel and fruity, lots of black licorice. The hops are kind of earthy. There is a birch like quality I am getting as well as the black licorice. This will probably be a love it or hate it beer. Yet another interesting beer from Shorts. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.
