A - Pours a dark black color with some brown mixed in and a finger of frothy khaki colored head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.
S - Aroma is bursting with citrus and earthy hops with some roasted and lightly burnt malts and some smoke.
T - Starts off with a nice kick of citrus hops with some grapefruit flavor and some bitterness alongside some roasted caramel malts and a hint of smoke. Through the middle, some more earthy hops come through with more citrus flavor as well and some stronger bitterness. The finish continues the big hop trend with some stronger earthy hops, plenty of bitterness, with some smoky and burnt malts.
M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a bit bitter and dry finish.
D - Very drinkable. Really big hop flavor that is a bit unbalanced, but I really find myself enjoying the boldness of it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BeerGeyser (36) - San Marcos, California, USA - NOV 19, 2011
12 oz bottle. Pours dark with a light white head, The aroma is floral with a roasted character. The initial taste is genuinely a Black IPA.....roasted malt with hoppy floral tongue followed by a lightly lasting bitter after taste. Not bad. I would like to classify this as a session Black IPA being that it is light in alcohol at 5% but has the flavor of a stronger ale.

Thanks to Jeff for the bottle! Poured healthy deeper brown with a nice beige head. The aroma picked up fresh, bright pine, spruce, and citrus hoppage over dry-roasted dark chocolates and ashy notes.. I really dug it. The flavor was bitter throughout, with pine and floral notes leading.. dry roast on the edges complemented the hops.. lighter-weight, dry chocolates and roasty black patent malts at the core.. picked up some citrus to join the long, bitter, tasty finish. Medium-bodied at most on the palate.. dry, very bitter, and very roasty.. this somehow held its balance.. really, really good brew!

Pours black with a mocha colored head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and pineapple. Sweet light fruit melts into dark roasty malt, with a hop finish. Medium body, plenty of carbonation, and a numbing bitterness. Very tasty.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a light brown head. Toasty chocolate malty, mild toffee, vanilla, organic, slightly piney hoppy aroma. The hops in the nose aren’t as potent as done black ipas but still nice. Dark chocolate, mild caramel, roasty malty, bitter, piney, organic hoppy flavor. Solid brew.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 corby112 (2214) - philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 20, 2011
Thanks to lurchingbeast for sending this recently.
Pours a dark chesnut brown color that appears black in the glass with mahogany edges and a half finger beige head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal spots with some steaks of lacing.
Slightly sweet aroma with a nice balance of earthy and citrus hops along with toasted/roasty malt. Hints of pine needle and grapefruit, resinous hop oil countered by toasted makt with hints of chocolate, toast and licorice. Finally a black ipa that smells more of hops. Hopefully the malts are as tame in the flavor.
Medium bodied with a nice balance of dry, earthy hop bitterness and sweet roasted malt. Not as hop dominant as the aroma suggest but the flavor is still strong. Dry, floral, earthy and bitter up front with lots of sticky, dry, piny hops that are countered by hints of toast, coffee, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit and licorice. Slight heat toward finish. Again the malts are there but not overly sweet letting the hops do their thing. Still I wish it was a bit more bitter with less malt. That being said, it’s one of the better examples of the style I’ve had.
