Bludgeon Yer Eye is an India Black Ale. Intense fruity and floral aromas, along with a subtle malty fragrance, emits from the beer. The deep black color complements the rich, dark roasted malt flavors. The unexpected twist comes when the high hop bitterness takes over and leaves a bitter finish.

On tap at Wheatberry. Awesome brew all around. Pours pitch black with a thicker mocha cap that settles down and leaves some big sticky lacing. Nose involves a healthy dose of pine, earth, coffee and roasted malts, some citrus, spice notes, vanilla, dark cacao and pepper. Nicely bitter with just a light sweetness that hardly peeks through. Medium bodied, prickly, zesty, with a spicy hop finish. Wow. Glad this was on tap. Good stuff.

Opaque black - brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Light palate. Semi dry. Mildly roasted dark malts. A little piney hop and a and trace of insipid red berry fruits underneath. Finishes semi dry. An okay black IPA but there are many very good ones around and this is a little underwhelming.

This one poured a medium brown color with a beige head. Aroma of herbal and piney hops, together with roasted malt and light burnt coffee. Flavor was a good blend of earthy and herbal hops, light grapefruit, and some roast bitterness. Above average Black IPA

Bottle shared with Brendan and Paul. Pours a deep brown body with thin off white lacing. Aroma is pine, resin, soap, and citrus. Mouthfeel is medium with nice carbonation and notes of grapefruit, pine, light floral character, light cocoa, and light roast. Very Nice Black IPA.

Bottle and served in my Ratebeer Tulip: Pours a deep brown near black with a lasting frothy tan head. The aroma has notes of dank, grassy, citric hops along with charred, roasted and bready malts. A bit earthy but this is all about the hops and char. Aggressive biting resiny and lightly juicy hops over a layer of dark malts with a touch of pepper on the finish. There is a unique industrial taste and feel about the finish I am not a fan of however which takes the scores down a bit. Overall it is a solid enough brew but I have better in this genre (including my homebrew).

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/30/2012. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, mango, orange zest, pineapple, toast, pine, roasted malt, light char, grass, floral, and light herbal. Damn nice aromas with a great hop profile and solid roasted malt backbone. Taste of big dark roasted malt, coffee, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, light char, pineapple, toast, floral, grass, and piney spiciness. Nice amount of pine and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, toast, pineapple, roasted malt, light char, coffee, pine, floral, grass, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and hop complexity; with a nice roasted malt backbone that is well balanced with the hop flavors; almost zero cloying flavors are present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with nearly zero warming present on the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA! Great hop flavor profile and balance with roasted malts; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering as expected.

Bottle courtesy of Mike. Thanks Mike! Pours deep dark and murky with a full light khaki head. Nose is fully roasted with a really nice grassy note to it. Flavor is different but in a good way. Fresh grass and dark malts throughout. Really enjoyable.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a muddy black with a thin beige head. Aroma is very piney with no real malt aroma detected. Taste is big and bold, almost all hops here. Small amount of lacing left on the glass. Palate is long that finishes bitter. Overall this beer is the best black ipa I’ve had so far. The next one has a lot to live up to.

12oz bottle from Kalamazoo megabev. Pour is dark black with brown hue. Offwhite cola like head is a half inch thick. Intense floral hop scent, maybe a bit reminiscent of citrus as well. Taste is really unique. Thick and chalky mouth feel. Bitter with hops at first, accompanied by a taste I can describe no other way than wheaty. Roasted malt finish that's a little bitter and slightly chocolatey. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
