Bludgeon Yer Eye is an India Black Ale. Intense fruity and floral aromas, along with a subtle malty fragrance, emits from the beer. The deep black color complements the rich, dark roasted malt flavors. The unexpected twist comes when the high hop bitterness takes over and leaves a bitter finish.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 10/30/2012. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a nice 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty foamy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, mango, orange zest, pineapple, toast, pine, roasted malt, light char, grass, floral, and light herbal. Damn nice aromas with a great hop profile and solid roasted malt backbone. Taste of big dark roasted malt, coffee, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, light char, pineapple, toast, floral, grass, and piney spiciness. Nice amount of pine and roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, toast, pineapple, roasted malt, light char, coffee, pine, floral, grass, and piney spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Great flavor balance and hop complexity; with a nice roasted malt backbone that is well balanced with the hop flavors; almost zero cloying flavors are present on the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with nearly zero warming present on the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black IPA! Great hop flavor profile and balance with roasted malts; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering as expected.

Aromas of roasted coffee with a strong spruce hop presence; all overlaid by a wild, rustic rye flavor. Medium body; a fairly long finish with roasted coffee and the hop bitterness.

Poured from a bottle dated 04/14/2015. Aroma is fairly malt forward with some light roast and chocolate, light dark caramel and some moderate toasted bread. Moderate hop notes, woody with some pine resin and grapefruit. Slightly dank. Pours dark brown, not quite black with a medium large, moderately thick, light mocha head head that recedes fairly quickly to the edges where it lingers. Flavor is slightly sweet with some light chocolate and roast notes. Medium light toasted bread and cracker malt character. Moderate bitterness. Some medium light citrus notes with some pine resin and woodsy hop character. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright black IPA. Maltier in the aroma than I expected, but the flavor isn’t as roast forward. Hop profile is a bit muted but it works for a black IPA.

Something seems to be missing here. Not enough malt, hops, im not sure? Liked last years black ipa better.

Another Short’s extra from umich03jm. Thanks, Jason! 12oz bottle pours nearly black with a nice beige head. Aroma is toffee, raisin and pine. Flavor is burnt caramel, toffee, char and pine. Finish is pine bitterness... Just enough to balance. I got this about five weeks ago, so the hops might be a bit subdued compared with fresh. This is pretty tasty, regardless.

Pour on tap at Crunchy’s, dark reddish orange pour with off white head, aroma brought notes of caramel, rye, spice, touch of fruit into citrus, some pine, hints of earth. Taste was a mix of orange, caramel, toffee into some pine, grass, toasted bread, rye and spice, finishing slightly bitter.

Black iPas are not my favorite, but this one is pretty good. Pours a deep black with a foamy tan head. Nice floras notes finished with a toasty malted flavor. Flavors of roasted malts, slight floral flavor finished by a coffee flavor.

12oz bottle. Pour is very dark. Head fades to tight tan ring. Floral notes dominate the nose as do roasted malts. Distinct bitterness shines through on the finish. Licorice and cocao are evident but oveshadowed by the bitterness. More-so than you would expect. Hard to get over that.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a light tan head that leaves behind a mess of lacing after a few drinks. Aromas of citrus and roasted malts, some alcohol apparent as it warms. Tastes of roasted malts and fruity hops, strong bitterness. Medium bodied, average carbonation, bitter finish.

Another from Shorts. This one pours a dark black color. With a smooth long lasting light brown head. It settles still into an interesting oil on water look. A dark roasty licorice aroma. With a background of malt and citrus hops. A bright floral hop flavor right upfront. A sharp carbonation on the throat and tongue. A big roasty flavor comes back in the end. With warmth of cocoa flavors. Very unique.

Bottle. Black color with medium tan head. Aroma is strong pine with hints of dark chocolate. Medium body with light carbonation. Slight sweetness of chocolate, but that is overpowered by a strong hoppy pine flavor that lingers on the palate.
