Incredibly floral green hop aromas jump out at you, the initial taste lends pleasant roasted flavors, followed by a wonderful bitter finish.

Opaque black - brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Light palate. Semi dry. Mildly roasted dark malts. A little piney hop and a and trace of insipid red berry fruits underneath. Finishes semi dry. An okay black IPA but there are many very good ones around and this is a little underwhelming.

Draft sample. Poured clear ruby black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted and floral hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bitter flavor with a moderate to heavy bitter finish of medium to long duration. Very good brew that I would recommend to a freind.

Bottle poured a clear dark brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, charcoal, grapefruit, pine and light orange. Palate was medium bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of charcoal, roasted malt, pine and grapefruit with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger of off-white head. S: Has that sort of funky aroma that a lot of black IPAs have. A decent bit of hoppiness, a bit of grass and pine. There is a light fruitiness, also a touch of fruit/plums. Maybe some chocolate, too. T: Kind of sweet, a little bit of chocolate. Sort of hoppy, some sweet hop flavors, a bit of plum, some citrus hops, too. A light pine bitterness and a bit of roasted malt. M: Medium bodied with a medium carbonation. O: Not as hoppy as I would have liked, but pretty decent.

Thanks to Jeff for the bottle! Poured healthy deeper brown with a nice beige head. The aroma picked up fresh, bright pine, spruce, and citrus hoppage over dry-roasted dark chocolates and ashy notes.. I really dug it. The flavor was bitter throughout, with pine and floral notes leading.. dry roast on the edges complemented the hops.. lighter-weight, dry chocolates and roasty black patent malts at the core.. picked up some citrus to join the long, bitter, tasty finish. Medium-bodied at most on the palate.. dry, very bitter, and very roasty.. this somehow held its balance.. really, really good brew!

Sampled on draft at GTMW 2011. Pours nearly black but clear and with ruby highlights. Large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, and bitter earthy hops. The taste is bitter earthy hops and faint roasted malts. Medium bodied.

Bottle @ home. Deep brown appearance with a light brown head. Toasty chocolate malty, mild toffee, vanilla, organic, slightly piney hoppy aroma. The hops in the nose aren’t as potent as done black ipas but still nice. Dark chocolate, mild caramel, roasty malty, bitter, piney, organic hoppy flavor. Solid brew.

This beer pours a dark brown color with a medium foamy tan head that recedes steadily to a film. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of piney and floral hops as well as roasted malts. Medium body with a moderately bitter resiny hops character, and flavors of citrus, pine and sweet toasty malt. The finish is hoppy up front with a lingering malt sweetness left over. Well-balanced Black IPA that pretty much nails what I perceive to be the style’s goal.

Bottle and served in my Ratebeer Tulip: Pours a deep brown near black with a lasting frothy tan head. The aroma has notes of dank, grassy, citric hops along with charred, roasted and bready malts. A bit earthy but this is all about the hops and char. Aggressive biting resiny and lightly juicy hops over a layer of dark malts with a touch of pepper on the finish. There is a unique industrial taste and feel about the finish I am not a fan of however which takes the scores down a bit. Overall it is a solid enough brew but I have better in this genre (including my homebrew).

On tap at HopCat - December 29, 2010. Served in an imperial pint glass. Pours close to black with a single-finger tan head and some nice lacing. The nose brings forward a good dose of roasted malt as well as some nice pine character from the hops. A bit of an earthiness to it as well. The taste is more toward the roasted end of the Black IPA scale with some mild bitter chocolate there as well. Pine hops linger throughout, providing more bitterness than flavor. Good body and carbonation. A nice and drinkable version of the style. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 01-02-2011
