3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured an opaque black color with a nice tan head. Smell was slightly vinous with a little chocolate as well. Taste was some vanilla, with a vinous quality as well, almost tasted wine barrel aged as opposed to the bourbon barrel, sweet malt, vanilla, and a distant balancing bitterness. This wasn’t quite what I expected, but I really enjoyed it.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks to Drew for this: Pours like cola, with bourbon and vanilla in the nose. I got some underlying citrus here too. Flavor is lightly coffee, vanilla, dry, woody, and finishes with bourbon on the palate but in a way that it was pleasant and not overpowering. This was a treat.

22oz bottle: Midnight black pour with a beautiful head that is creamy and leaves lots of lace. Dry cocoa dusted nose of bittersweet chocolate and nuts. The body is creamy with a nice complexity. Lots of vanilla and fudge, balanced with a punch of bourbon and oak. Drinks easy and is actually pretty refreshing.

Thanks, once again, to Jeff for this gem.
Pours a cola-like dark brown with a 1/2 inch head that quickly recedes to the very outer edges.
Smells of bourbon, berries and molasses. Actually, a very tasty smelling beer.
Similar flavors to the smell with some odd similarities to cola. Not that this is necessarily bad, but it is interesting that it ended up this way. Definitely a fair amount of bourbon here, but the flavors work, so I don’t mind. Coffee and some more dark fruits also present themselves.
Medium to low carbonation helps this beer from being too thin. Mind you, this is only 6.5%, so don’t expect a huge body. Surprisingly, the bourbon doesn’t really thin out this beer at all - I would guess this beer, without the bourbon aging, would have no more body than this, and quite possibly less. All of this helps to make this a very drinkable bourbon barrel aged beer. Slight alcohol hit at the end - in a nice, warming way.
I’ve not had something quite like this before, but it works well. An interesting mix of flavors with strong bourbon characteristics that make for a truly hearty schwarzbier. I can see having this with big Thanksgiving spread.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared at Cbus tasting 11. Poured a dark brown black color. Aroma was vanilla malts and bourbon. Taste was a bit wild for me. A bit of everything. Vanilla, malts, chocolate, lots of bourbon, and even some sort of tartiness. A fruit, cherries, maybe?

Poured a clear deep red-brown color with an off-white head. Bourbon aroma is moderate and balanced with some vanilla and a light roast. Well blended. The flavor is of roasted malt and vanilla. Light-medium bodied.

bottle from mibirder. This is a great example of the depth and complexity that bourbon barrel aging can add to a beer. Bourbon really complements this brew. Very good, very smooth, and very drinkable.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bomber. Nearly perfect black body was topped with a khaki head. The aroma was fairly strong bourbon with the oak and some vanilla. There is also a leathery note. The little bit of cola is behind that character. The taste is like bourbon and Coke more than anything else. Once you get past that mixed drink character, you get a little bit of peanuts and chocolate. But again, bourbon and Coke dominate, something I do not recall tasting in a beer. This may please those that love the sweet Schwarzbiers, but I prefer the ones that have mroe roasted character. Huge disappointment as I normally love Shorts.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
From a 22oz Bottle. Courtesy of CharlesDarwin. Mostly transparent, dark rootbeer brown colored pour with a finger of fizzy, light tan head. Aromas of bourbon are clearly present, but not overpowering, bringing forth notes of caramel, rye seed, vanilla and a warming booziness. An underlying chocolate maltiness lies beneath, but its not really distinguishable as a schwarzbier. Medium bodied, softly carbonated mouthfeel with a relatively thin, light texture. Flavors of light chocolate and caramel malt up front on the palate with a hint of roast. The bourbon flavors develop mid-palate, and have a distinct, rye-like character hidden in there with the oaky vanilla. Finishes with a lager-like cleanness and quickness before shades of bourbon booziness makes it’s way back to linger in my breath. Enjoyable beer overall, especially in the relatively high drinkability with bourbon complexity. Unfortunately, the distinguishing schwartzbier qualities are hidden behind the bourbon, so the lack of bigger malt flavors is apparent and missed, keeping the flavors from meshing just right. Thanks for the special treat, Tom!
