Bourbon Barrel Soaked Sustenance Beer is our spring Schwarzbier (black lager) aged in bourbon barrels for 10 months. It features rich roasted malt qualities with bold flavors of vanilla, charred oak, and even a slight nuttiness. The light, crisp finish makes this bourbon soaked beer light in flavor, which is wonderful because it highlights the complexities of the bourbon aging process. The light body also makes it an ideal beer for a springtime refreshment.

Thanks to northernbrews for sharing this. Pours a dark brown with thin dark tan head that dissipates quickly, very little lacing. Aroma strong of alcohol and bourbon, chocolate, and caramel. Flavor matches well, but wasn’t quite as hot as aroma would have suggested. Had a slight acidic nature and a lot of chocolate and vanilla. Overall very nice brew.

Pour on tap at Old Chicago, dark brownish black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of big caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits come in to a bit of bourbon, vanilla, hints of oak. Taste is a mix of toffee, oak, vanilla into big bourbon, hints of chocolate, coffee and roast, nice molasses, hints of earth, finishing sweet.

bottle thanks to mike (I think). pours black with a reddish brown highlight. minimal head. nose when cold is all booze. Taste is light milk chocolate with a touch of bitter chocolate, short of coffee, but has a lactose kind of mouthfeel. could just be the vanilla tannins from the wood. pretty damn good. could use some more carbonation. otherwise, a light soy note,

(bottle) deep brown-black colour with a frothy beige head. aroma of heavy vanilla, brown sugar and some fudge, quite oxidized, with a hint of roasted malts. flavour is more of the same, milk chocolate and roasted malts, rather alcoholic and again quite oxidized, with a pronounced lemony tartness in the dry finish. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

Bottle split at Mother Kelly’s during RBESG ’14, from the Kernel Rot Box, 08/08/14. Light black with a moderate tan swirl and edgeing. Nose is light roast, faint must, cocoa, BA effect evident, dark toffee. Taste comprises a mellow dark fruit rinse, light spice, cocoa rub, dark toffee fudge, bourbon notes, light woody tinge. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, smei drying close. Ok BA schwarz - if such a thing really exists!!

Bottle at RBESG 2014. Dark almost black beer with a decent beige head. Woody vanilla aroma, caramel, cream, bourbon, biscuits, some licorice. Sweet malty licorice flavor, woody, bourbon, vanilla, raisins, figs, chocolate, some licorice. Maybe not a schwarzbier, but quite good.
