COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bourbon Wizard has a monstrous malt bill, and a boil time of 6 hours and 66 minutes, which creates a dark amber color and a full-body. There is also a high residual malty sweetness of caramel and toffee. To help make this barleywine a little more balanced, and ensure that there is not an overwhelming alcohol flavor, we add raisins for sweetness and a large amount of hops.

The name “Wizard” hinted at the origin of the malt bill, which was the same recipe as our Magician, just three times larger. Upon its original release at the pub, the Bourbon Wizard has become a yearly staple and is often brewed in the late fall or early winter.

UPDATED: APR 20, 2012 Many, many thanks to Sean! Big, elegant molasses, prune, raisin, and fig aroma. Oooh. This is dense, creamy and luxurious. A big tidal pool of sweetness runs into a glacial wall of crisp bourbon. Wonderful wood dryness and booze aromatics balance with the intense dark malt presence for a fantastic pairing. Reminds me of an American interpretation of some of the JW Lees vintages. Love the super intense raisin malt with the Bourbon aging. Special to try. Very appreciative to have had the opportunity to try this and find a perfect tipple for an evening of near-April snow.

Pouring at the Night of the Barrels at EBF. Pours a clear ruby brown. Big vanilla and bourbon on the nose. Too much bourbon, and way too sweet. Gag inducing. Struggled to put any of this down.

1/15/11. Had at the Sea Bass tasting! Huge sweet aroma with vanilla, dark fruits, and molasses. Hugely rich flavor full of dark fruits, vanilla, molasses, and more. Even better than the regular version!

Tasted at the big “SeaBass has got to go” tasting courtesy of HOPSHUNTER. 12oz bottle pours amber and ruby with tiny white head. The aroma is molasses, a touch of vanilla, spicy oak, cherries, a little bit of prune and more molasses deep into the draw. The taste is rich for sure with prunes and aged ripe cherries and quickly moves into rich yummy molasses, smooth mild spicy oak and modest sweet smooth bourbon getting just a touch boozy into the finish. It almost has a yummy chocolate covered molasses for moments here and there. Into the finish prune, cherry and dates help take this to a tasty closure. This is way richer and smooth and yummier than the non barrel aged version I had just a few minutes ago. The barrel compliments perfectly here and doesn’t get in the way of this beer rich barleywine beeriness. Well done.

Hand bottle… Tampa “Farewell to Sebletitje” TastingThis beer rocks!… Clear, deep copper ale without much of a head. The nose is a marriage of toffee, dark fruits, toasted nuts and caramel with touches of bourbon and dried prune. Medium-bodied with laid-back carbonation. The rich flavor leans roasted and bitter, but offers a malty-sweet caramel component as well. Roasty, moderately bitter finish with gentle alcohol warmth. World class barleywine!

Thanks to the kind soul (jdubfl?) who shared this at the So Long Sea Bass Tasting. Pours a brown amber with an off-white head. Nose is malt, caramel, vanilla, raisin, date, fig, and bourbon. Flavor has the barrel taking over the raisiny flavor of the regular version. Light-bodied and lingering bourbon and vanilla in the finish.

Draft sample. Poured dark ruby color with an average frothy off-white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy prune, dark fruit and bourbon aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy bourbon bittersweet flavor with a moderate to heavy bourbon bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. Holy shit this beer rocks.

GABF 2010, a little late on the upload. Pours a hazy dark brown color with a small light tan head on top. Bourbon city on the aroma, but awesome. Molasses, oak, caramel, and toffee as well. The flavor has sweet caramel malt notes with toffee, molasses, anise, and chocolate. Oh yeah and the barrel does not hide here. Oak, bourbon, and vanilla are big. Medium-bodied and smooth with substantial booziness (but not too much) and lower-end carbonation. Solid stuff. I’m a fan.

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2011 the highlight of the shorts party at hopcat, 12/10...black pour with minimal beige head..massive milky aroma full of sweet bourbon, roasted nuts, creamy chocolate, raisin and light vanilla. huge milk chocolate, cream, caramel, raisin, and molasses. ends with a touch of vanilla prior to the slick oaky finish. stellar!

Handbottle, courtesy GoT. This pours a mostly clear, dark cola brown color and topped by a small tan colored head that settles to a thin film and leaves spots of lace that drip down the glass. The aroma shows notes of dark chocolate, dark fruit, caramel, toffee, and a big component of bourbon, and vanilla laden oak. There is not much in the way of hops. The flavors follow suit and are based in the sweet chocolate and caramel to go with the huge bourbon and vanilla laden oak. Nearly full bodied and slick on the palate with light carbonation that shows slightly sticky, but refrains from becoming overly cloying. Nice beer and really tasty if you like bourbon.
