COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pub Brew. Bourbon Carrot Cake is an experimental dessert ale made with carrots, marshmallow, vanilla, maple syrup, orange zest, walnuts, pecans, and spices and then aged in bourbon barrels. The aroma is enticing, emitting fragrances that literally recreate a slice of carrot cake that has been soaked in bourbon, right down to the cream cheese frosting. Incredibly complex, yet surprisingly balanced, the flavor of each specialty ingredient seems to take its turn. Pleasant flavors of spice and cream resonate on the palate causing an uncontrollable craving to taste more.

On tap at the Shorts Anniversary. Pours a nice dark red color. A lot of different flavors blend together nicely and interesting. A tart sweet sugary taste base it off. A slight alcohol back feel. Big creamy feel all around. A big sweet finish. Good stuff. Definitely feel that the original would be better. I really need to try it.

Growler from Sean - thanks! Clear rusty color in the glass with a scattering of white foam. Bourbon and light spice in the aroma (not necessarily carrot). Taste is lightly bitter bourbon with cream and well, carrot (yeah, itís in there), with doughy cake. Bourbon goes a bit medicinal toward the finish. Interesting.

Draft at shorts. Orangey brown with a beige head. Bourbon, vanilla and light spice. Tastes like a Manhattan with a little white rum.

Damn I wanted this to be a home run but was still real good. Pours a brown with minimal head. Aroma of sweet cream spices and some Bourbon. Taste is lots of barrel with some cream cheese and spices coming through. Medium body light to.medium carbonation. Tasty but Iím guessing the bourbon takes away from the original which I havenít tried yet.

Pour from a growler, Thanks Jeff! Hazy golden orange color with a small ring of foam. Aromas are vanilla, musty oak, carrot cake and a bit of alcohol. Tastes like a boozy carrot cake. Lots of oak and vanilla to mix with cinnamon and nutmeg. A tad hot on the finish. Pretty nice but I think I would love the non-barrel version a lot more.

Tap at Michigan Winter Beer Festival - 22-Feb-2014. Amber with small head. Carrot cake spicing. I think Iíd prefer this more without the bourbon aging, but itís pretty good as-is.

UPDATED: SEP 17, 2014 Growler: Thanks to Jeff for hooking this one up. Rusty, muddled brown color with not much head at all, sitting very still in the glass. Aroma is pretty amazing. Lots of sweet cream & vanilla frosting up front. Complex, picking up notes of nutmeg, light toffee, brown baking sugar, moist cinnamon cake, light mallow, toasty bread, slight nuttiness... Wow, seriously, it smells like damn carrot cake. Not much bourbon on the nose, but Iím okay with that. The taste actually has much more of a bourbon barrel presence. Boozy toffee, oak, cinnamon, fruity potpourri-like spiciness, nutmeg, toasted bread, light creamy sweetness, slightly woody/tannic finish. Body could stand to be a bit thicker, but it holds its own. Though the taste wasnít as captivating as the aroma, this is truly a unique, delicious, & awesome beer. Hopefully soon I will get to try the non-barrel aged version to compare.

Growler: The aroma consists of cinnamon, ginger, carrot cake, and bourbon. It pours a mostly transparent orangish-brown with a minimal off-white head that quickly fades to a very fine ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of carrot cake with a touch of cinnamon. The finish has moderate bourbon and oak. Itís medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, the carrot cake is there, but the bourbon, while not hot, is pretty dominant.

On tap at the brewpub. Another one of Shortís weird and wonderful beers. If you made a carrot cake with bourbon it would taste just like this. Not something you would drink everyday, but very nuanced and well executed.
