COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Pub Brew. Bourbon Huma is our best-selling American India Pale Ale aged in Bourbon barrels for up to 9 months. Initial malt sweetness is replaced with flavors of charred oak and sweet vanilla, followed by the standard Huma hop punch to the palate. This new combination creates the sensation of sipping on a sweet Bourbon that finishes like a bitter hop theme park in your mouth.

In a tulip, golden pour with no head to speak of. On tap at Guinness, Thee Irish Pub in the Detroit airport. This IPA has a definite place in my heart from here on. The waitress told me there were 156 IBUs and although I had a better idea, I decided to jump in with both feet. Nice and smooth like a fine bourbon, bitter without biting too hard. Aftertaste is boozy but lasts true to the taste of the beer throughout. An excellent addition to my meal and something I would buy again if given an opportunity.

Draft at Rockwell/Republic - pours a dark gold . Big bourbon oak aromas . Taste is citrus meets oak , still pretty bitter . Overall good .

From very old notes - Well, apparently I didn’t write much about this one, but there’s a rating and I thought it was very good. Full bodied. Big, bitter hop flavor with citrus. Long, bitter finish.

On tap at the brewpub. Orange-golden pour with an off-white head. Nice, big citrus hop bitterness well balanced with a bourbon sweetness, Excellent stuff.

Tap: Golden-amber with rusty orange tints; mild haze throughout, topped with a weak head that lasts as a foamy white film & collar. Aroma is largely floral, like a flower patch. Hoppy perfume, mild caramel, big vanilla, & a gushing, tangerine fruitiness. Not much bourbon explicitly, but lots of reminders of spicy oak & vanilla. The flavor is definitely more barrel-heavy... The first sip stings with bitter hop perfume, spicy tannins, ashy hop leaves, rose pedals, leading to a warming, bourbon-laden finish. Warmth opens up mild notes of bitter citrus peel & tangerine zest, but the aftertaste is still dominated with florals, wood, & bourbon. Mild vanilla & a hint of toffee malt present at times. Not bad, a decent attempt at a polarizing style that I’m still not a huge fan of. I’d honestly rather just have regular Huma.

On tap at Ashley’s Bourbon Barrel Takeover on March 25. The pour is a foggy dark gold with a nice foamy white head and some sporadic lacing. The aroma is really big on hops. The citrus rolls through and fades to a good maltiness toward the back end. There is definitely a bourbon quality to this, but not as much vanilla as you might expect from it. The flavor is similar. There is a good citrusy hoppiness and a mild malty caramel character. The bourbon is a little lacking in the flavor, which is a bit of a hindrance here. The mouth feel is decent for an IPA, and it’s like the bourbon barrel has taken some of the carbonation out. The aftertaste is a bit grassy, with a lingering booziness

Lots of bourbon, lots of hops. Vanilla, caramel, light floral aromas. Less abundant flavors, which get a little muddy on the palate. All in all, however, a very flavorful beer.

(Critique chaotique du extreme beer fest 2013): Un peu difficile à suivre, le bourbon chevauche un côté herbacé, correct.

Draft at crunchy's tap takeover. Medium brown with thin head. Sweet and vanilla aroma. Bourbon and sweet. All the hardcore bitterness has been tamed.

tap at 2013 michigan winter beer fest. amber with small head. i’m still not sure what to make of bourbon aged ipas, but this seems to work pretty well. not a subtle beer in any regard. big hops and substantial bourbon flavor.
