ControversiALE, FKA Hangin’ Frank, is a tribute to Simcoe hops. Simcoe hops are extremely sought after and limited, so Short’s is excited to share this brew with Michigan craft beer lovers every spring. The earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma is instantly delectable. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. While this beer is hopped like IPA, it drinks like Pale Ale. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it perfect for springtime.

Hoppy aromas that are pretty diverse - citrus (pine and grapefruit), maybe a little bit of apricot and even just a hint of garlic. The malt is definitely in the background. Nice Amber color that is fairly cloudy. Small off-white head. Taste is primarily a fairly heavy bitter. Body is medium; carbonation is slightly lively; finish is long and bitter. Overall this is a pretty good IPA; what I like is the complexity of the hop flavors - citrus, other fruits and that hint of onion.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy off white head that lasts. The aroma is floral and grain. Medium mouth, sweet hop, light bitterness, decent.

This beer is only available for a limited time, has just enough citrus flavor for my taste. One of my favorites!

Pours a beautiful copper color. Aroma provides some citrus notes however the taste is bitter with very earthy or even piney notes. A nice IPA.

The aroma is hoppy - citrus. Pours a copper/brown/orange with small off-white head, mostly diminishing and good lacing. The taste is bitter. The body is medium, the texture is thin, the carbonation fizzy and the finish bitter and a little astringent. To be fair I forgot about these in the refrigerator and I think they have been there a while.

Bottle. Pours a nearly clear orange with moderate white head that laced massively. Aroma is a citrus pine combo, not extreme, but moderate. Taste is slightly bitter with ctitrus notes. Earthy pine finish, oily. Moderate mouthfeel. Solid American IPA here.

The Short’s just keeps coming. Sweet! Here we go. This is reviewed from notes. I poured this into a pint glass and received this in a trade. The appearance was a nice ruddy to golden orange to brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dies at a nice one minute pace. The smell was a bitter citrus hoppiness running about my nose. There were some light malts trying to come in. The taste was basically bitter but ended up allowing a decent sweet maltiness coming in here and there. The palate had a decent sessionability about it but it did also have a nice carbonation that wasn’t too harsh nor wasn’t too light for an AIPA. Overall, in my opinion, this was a good AIPA well worthy of having again.

Bottle of unknown vintage grabbed in Ann Arbor. From top to bottom a classic American styled IPA. Good citrus hop notes with lingering resin bitterness. Solid.

On tap at the Wheat & Rye in Romulus, MI. Pour is amber with a white head. Lots and lots of lacing. Aroma is full of citrus and pine. Taste is very dry, citrus, pine, but it lacks the malty sweetness that I like. Aroma is nicer than the taste. Not particularly bitter. Medium slick mouthfeel.

Bottle. Mild grapefruit aroma, a little cheesy. Hazy amber colour. Small frothy white head. The flavour is malty with a decent bitterness. Has a little cardboard and stale bread notes. Tastes all right, but does not exactly have "tons of citrus hoppiness". Might be old, but who knows? The brewery might want to put a freshness date on their beers...
