COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
ControversiALE, FKA Hangin’ Frank, is a tribute to Simcoe hops. Simcoe hops are extremely sought after and limited, so Short’s is excited to share this brew with Michigan craft beer lovers every spring. The earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma is instantly delectable. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. While this beer is hopped like IPA, it drinks like Pale Ale. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it perfect for springtime.

Pours a cloudy orange with copper hue, small white head, decent lacing. Aroma of herbal and citrus hops, strong earthy character, resin, and a mild toasted malt backbone. Flavor matches well and makes for nice refreshing brew, but very forgetable.

Pours a beautiful copper red with a nice fluffy white head that laces just enough. Nose and taste are earthy, dry and bitter. The malt profile is so much better on this beer than the Huma. This beer is so nicely balanced and easy drinking. Kinda wish I had grabbed 2 6ers when I was in MI. This is a beer I could sit & drink all day. So good! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I really like this beer. . . only wish I had a bottle of the orig. hanging frank. Aroma is subdued grassiness built on sour mash, along with the citrus and pine that provide the foundation. A bit cloudy, and doesn’t taste like it would look that way. .. but incredibly unique taste, so. . . . Speaking of taste, I have to say this is one of my favorites. A really substantial IPA that is drinkable at the same time. I particularly like the evolving taste-- starts at a bubbly grassy feel, then grapefruity and a sweet carmel. Finishes cleaner than you’d think with that much flava. I like the slightly above average carbonation and substance to the palate. . . this does leave a bit of malty afterglow, but it clears quickly and cleanly. Excellent beer.

12 oz. bottle served in shaker (sampled 5.20.12)- poured the standard copper color with just a tint of maroon, medium carbonation, razor thin white head did lace very nicely along the sides of the glass. Aroma of a shitload of pine with some caramel thrown in. Hits the mouth with a long and wide body, malt is solidly firm with not as much caramel as expected, good size hop wave in the middle, finish is acidic. NEXT!

12oz bottle pours clear copper with thin white head. The mild aroma offers up citrus grapefruit and under ripe orange peel bittering notes along with faint malt sweetness. The taste has a pretty decent amount of hops that lean in the direction of bitterness with only a smattering of flavor hops and a dash of sweet maltiness. Like in the nose I get grapefruit, pithy orange peel bitterness and just enough sweetness to notice. Nice bitter IPA.

12oz bottle, shared by robotopera. Good, thin to minimal khaki head. Clear amber color. Little lace. Intriguing, unique earthy hop aroma. Like rye - or crushed hemp seeds. Good, lighter crisp carbonation. Dry texture. Interesting aftertaste. Lighter bitter taste. Tasty, interesting brew.

12oz bottle. Rating #120. Nice beer, good hop presence, nice bright orange appearance. It was a little overly bitter, not a lot of balance, still pretty enjoyable overall. (2358)

Nice but subdued aroma. Heavy on the grapefruit, with moderate hop bitterness and smooth caramel flavors. Hints of lemongrass. Good carbonation and overall an above average IPA.
