ControversiALE, FKA Hangin’ Frank, is a tribute to Simcoe hops. Simcoe hops are extremely sought after and limited, so Short’s is excited to share this brew with Michigan craft beer lovers every spring. The earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma is instantly delectable. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. While this beer is hopped like IPA, it drinks like Pale Ale. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it perfect for springtime.

Hazy orange golden color with a small, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral hops, citrus, light pine, and some toasted malts. Taste of citrus, pine, toffee, and some grapefruit in the finish.

(12oz bottle courtesy of rayl101. Thanks Kevin!). Pours cloudy yellow-orange color with 1 finger off-white head. Active carbonation. Aroma has resin, mango, orange and other tropical fruit. Papaya. Taste is sweet and malty with some pleasant bitterness. Thin to medium bodied with an oily texture. Bitter finish. Nice, easy drinking beer.

A: The beer pours a slightly hazed golden amber color with a billowing white head. Beautiful. S: Certainly some piney and citrus hops, but also a substantial malt aroma. It’s surprisingly nutty, which I wasn’t expecting. Bread and toffee with a nice floral character rounds out the nose. T: Lots of hop bitterness to this beer. Not too much in the way of hop flavor, other than a bit of pine and grapefruit peel. Lots more of that nutty and toffee-like malt character. M: Medium in body with a medium level of carbonation. O: Good but not amazing. Certainly some better Shorts IPAs out there.

Bottle. Pours a dingy and darkish amber with a massive pillowy head and aromas that are heavy with citrus (grapefruit and lemon), a little bit of something sweet (brown sugar/caramel) and a little soap. Flavor explodes into a burst of soapy grapefruit with enough malt sweetness to keep things from getting out of control. This is well balanced and light on the palate.

4oz pour at Churchkey. Pours a hazy, dark gold with a thin, wispy white head. Nose of zesty hops, grapefruit, pine, limes. Flavor is easy on the malt which allows the amarillo to come through, grapefruit, light lemon, some light cracker and light biscuit. Full bodied, dry, bitter finish.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. Poured a dark golden color with very little head. Aroma was pine hops, caramel malts. Flavor was incredibly tasty.

Draft at CDA at Fizz. Pours a deep amber with offwhite head. Nose isn’t particularly pleasant. Some piney hops and some old caramel. Quite grainy as well and not super IPA-like. On taste, a lot of husky graininess, lacking in the hop department and a bit too caramelly. Just seems discombobulated. Not a fan.

12oz bottle. Dark amber/goldish color, thin creamy head. Little hazy and cloudy. Aroma is pretty hoppy with slight malts coming through. Flavor is toasty and somewhat dry but still has some good citrus flavors on the back end. A pretty basic beer but still very good.
