ControversiALE, FKA Hangin’ Frank, is a tribute to Simcoe hops. Simcoe hops are extremely sought after and limited, so Short’s is excited to share this brew with Michigan craft beer lovers every spring. The earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma is instantly delectable. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. While this beer is hopped like IPA, it drinks like Pale Ale. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it perfect for springtime.

Bottle shared by Daknole – thanks Dak! Pours cloudy amber with a thin off-white head. The nose is musty weed, citrus and malt. The taste is hop oils, citrus, caramel and tart grapefruit. Interesting brew.

Brownish amber color. Decent foamy head with some very nice sticky lacing left behind. Aroma has a mild sweet & slightly fruity note to it. Flavor is largely just a big blast of bitterness from the hops. Carbonation seems right one, but the powerful bitterness take away a bit form the mouthfeel and overall drinkability. Glad I tried it, but not likely to seek this one out again.

Bottle generously shared by Dak...thanks bud!!! Golden tangerine pour with a 1/4 inch white head. Musty, dirty, and dry with spice, pepper, and grapefruit. Lots of evergreen and pine also. Medium mouthfeel. Unique and interesting but not great.

Pours cloudy orange-amber with a moderate white head. Faintly citrus nose but I’d call the hops more resiny than citrus. Nice and substantial bitterness, hint of sweet, good finish. Not bad, a notch above average. It certainly doesn’t stand out amongst all the other slightly above average bitter pale ales. Kind of a Two Hearted wannabe in flavor profile.

a decent pale ale, with darker color and smoky bitterness, definitely worth a try for hop lovers, flavor does not last for long, nothing special but good if you like pale ales...

Orange pour. Citrus and weed. Flavor tastes like weed and grapefruit peel. Very unique and very good!

Medium amber pour with white head. Nose is prodominantly citrusy hops with some malt sweetness. Flavors are hop-forward, bright citrus highlights and some hints of grassiness, Some nicely balanced malt sweetness with caramel and toffee. Very well brewed and refreshing.

Thanks to one of my fellow Flossmoor Station Mug Clubbers - This poured a pale amber body with a respectable head. The aroma was about the hops - citrus, hints of pine, and a bit of the cat box. The flavor had a balancing sweetness - soft caramel and some toasted grains - but it tipped in favor of a citrusy bitterness. The finish was dry and mildly bitter. Not bad.

poured from a 12-ounce bottle into a pint glass. Pours amber in color. Nose is toasty, malty, and hoppy, if I may be so generic. I’m also detecting carmel and maybe even a little ginger. Taste is citrusy and grapefruit; nice hop-profile. I’ve been waiting for quite sometime to have a go-a-round with this beer, as it isn’t very accessible in southwest Michigan. it has certainly lived up to it’s reputation. I’m not a Short’s fan in particular, but this is a great brew. Well done.

Has a copper pour, gave a white and off-white small head, carbonation appears to be a bit low in this beer, left some lacing on the glass, there were aromas of piney, grassy and citrus hops up front with toasted malt in the background, and some hints of caramel, with flavors of grassy and citrus hops, toasted malt and caramel, has a medium mouth feel, easy to gulp down, is this beer a Pale Ale or IPA? I thought it came off as a mixture of a Pale Ale and IPA, the label on the bottle reads ‘India Pale Ale’, RateBeer lists this beer as an American Pale ale.
