COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
ControversiALE, FKA Hangin’ Frank, is a tribute to Simcoe hops. Simcoe hops are extremely sought after and limited, so Short’s is excited to share this brew with Michigan craft beer lovers every spring. The earthy, citrus and pine-laced aroma is instantly delectable. A large amount of toasted grains and high alpha hops form a perfect union that creates the sensation of toasted sourdough covered with grapefruit hop marmalade. While this beer is hopped like IPA, it drinks like Pale Ale. The light, refreshing qualities of this beer make it perfect for springtime.

12oz bottle. Poured a medium, slight haze, amber color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, toasted grains, and a lighter earthiness. Tastes of citrus, caramel, and toasty.

courtesy of flandersned. very curious brew. not what i would expect from an ipa, more along the lines of a pale in some ways, but pretty odd. pours an amber orange with a lively orangish head to match. smell of crisp green apples. very tart in the taste to match as well, has a bright note immediately and then finishes sort of dry. slight infection maybe? its still pretty good, but i would think they would call it an apple pie ipa or something from what i am tasting here.

MBGSF ’10. Very citrus, lots of hops. The malts are toasty and biscuity, very crisp, with a touch of water cracker. Seriously refreshing and easy to drink. Definite winner for an APA.

Bottle. Dark amber. BIG fluffy head. Spicy hop nose. Wierd flavour. Pink grapefruit and dry soda. Dry hops come through in the aftertaste. Kind of a crazy beer.

Light amber color. Huge huge grapefruit nose with nothing else, but grapefruit. If my eyes were closed it would smell like pink grapefruit. Just massive grapefruits everywhere, but that is it. Highly carbonated. Freshly squeezed grapefruits into soda water. Dry finish.

This poured e medium orange color with an off white head. Aroma was of medium citrusy hops and some toasted caramel malt too. Flavor was bitter and somewhat fruity balanced by pale maltiness. An ok IPA

Bottle shared by DuffmanSW. Poured a hazy orangish color with thick white head. Aroma was tons of graperfruit peel and citrus notes. Taste was very unique for an IPA, with black pepper orange peel, grapefruit, and almost a nutty finish. Nice body. Glad I got to try this.

Bottle thanks to Secret Santa. Pours with a hazy golden yellow body with an off-white head. Aromas of citrus, papaya, orange, nuts and grain. Slightly husky and fruity. Flavors of papaya, roasted grain, raw pineapple, tons of esters (yeast), and lots of fruit. Something is off about the grain bill or the fermentation. I think there are some tannic components but it is hard to tell amongst the hops. Lingering acrid note. Still drinkable but something is off (as it seems with more than a few bottled Shorts beers). Dry, lightly acidic maybe, medium carbonation. Something is off.

Hazy orange amber with a fluffy taupe topper and lots o’ lace. Aroma of citrus, perfumed malt and not much else. Taste of caramel, citrus and grains. Semi-fizzy body with mild bitterness on the back end.

12 oz bottle courtesy of manny57. Pours a cloudy amber color with a huge clumpy white head that has good retention and ample lacing. The aroma is moderate in strength sweet toasted grains and barley malts. The flavor is similar to the aroma, lots of toasted grain flavors with mild biters. The palate is full and malty with lively carbonation. The finish is short and dry. Overall: A very interesting pale ale. Tastes sort of experimental, but that’s just Shorts.
