COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Freedom of ’78 is a medium bodied IPA with a wonderful, bright clarity and pleasing bronze hue. The aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit and subtle pine qualities. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss, and attributes of tangerine, nectarine, and even faint honey flavors are detectable. The finish quickly turns to an expected IPA bitterness that turns dry during prolonged tastings

bottle courtesy of flandersned, thanks for this chance to try this one! pours a crisp yellow with a medium white head that disappears fast but comes back with just a tiny swirl. the aroma is nice, some bright and bitter hops, just slightly soapy and astringent, and the guava adds a veny nice level of complexity to the aroma, very sweet and candy like, didn’t think it would show up this strongly on the nose, but it works well. the taste is to match. i was expecting crap from this one, but its actually very well done. its very unique, and changes a lot throughout the palate. sweet and candy like up front, then a good bitter kick from the hops in the middle and back, and fading into a sweet and balanced malty aftertaste. this one is interesting, a lil on the sweet side, but not totally overdone. the guava is done very nicely and the beer has a balanced profile of hops, guava and malt.

Draft at GABF. A knockout from Shorts. Pours a deep bronze with a nice fluffy head. Nose is intensely guava forward with a nice citrusy hop backing. Crisp and bright for sure. on tasting, the guava is strong but works really well with the hops. Light bready note and a dry finish. Fantastic stuff.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2015 Slightly cloudy medium orange with very little head. Sweet fruity aroma along with some citrus and floral hops. The fruit must be the agave, smells tasty. Taste is a very odd mix of agave fruit mixed with the earthiness of the hops. Strong bitterness adds something else too. An odd mix but I like it. Finish is dry and the agave taste stays with you. A good unique ipa that I recommend trying. Re-rate 4/29/15 - I think my tastes have changed. I love this IPA now. Super juicy guava aroma. Big guava and citrus taste. Light bitterness. So smooth. Light tartness. Great summer thirst quencher.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled 3/30/2012. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some decent spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big orange, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, floral, herbal, citrus peel, light pine, earth, and slight peppery spiciness. Very nice and well balanced aromas, with good strength and complexity. Taste of big grapefruit, tart/bitter citrus rind, bread, herbal, pine, orange zest, pineapple, and earthy spiciness. Good amount of earthy and tart citrus rind bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, herbal, pine, mango, and earthy spiciness on the finish for a while. Great balance of flavors with the guava character and hop bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and crisp mouthfeel. Very easy and smooth to drink at 7%. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is a great and very interesting IPA collaboration from Shorts and Half Acre. Great balance of flavors; and very smooth and enjoyable.

Pour from a 12 oz bottle. Clear tawny amber brew with small head, looks like a fine wine in the glass. Aroma of papaya and tropical fruit. Taste is modestly sweet on the inward draw with tart kiwi and citrus coming forward, then papaya and moderately strong citrus hops emerge. An earthy spiciness steps up towards the finish - almost like a mild cumin - and grounds it. Ends with a blast of grapefruit. Wow! Lighter body, clean and refreshing, very drinkable, very good. Awesome.

Bottle, pours a clear amber with white head. The aroma is tropical fruit, hops, black peppercorn, a great smelling beer. Taste is more tropical fruit, never tried/smelled guava so I’ll call it melon and mango. Some light spice as well. Interesting brew, good stuff.

i absolutely love this beer. such an interested treat from shorts, they rarely disappoint. the aroma is so unique, pine, exotic fruit, and maybe even a little mary jane. golden, amber, honey look to it with minimal head but some lacing sticks around. taste is identical to the smell. nice bitterness and kinda dry. shorts is always doing some things that are a little different and we michiganders appreciate them. this beer is a unique change up from the cookie cutter IPAs and its a pleasure to drink.

Rich juicy hops aroma, mostly citrusy pineapple and orange. .bright and hoppy, mostly clear with a light spritz and thin white head. pale malt background and a sharp tangy hops bite. hops juice through and through - a very very nice brew. medium finish with a bit of alcohol buzz. excellent, shame it’s so much more expensive ($14.99 a sixer) than comparable IPAs around here.
