Freedom of ’78 is a medium bodied IPA with a wonderful, bright clarity and pleasing bronze hue. The aroma is a unique fusion of citrus fruit and subtle pine qualities. The distinct characteristics of the guava nectar are impossible to miss, and attributes of tangerine, nectarine, and even faint honey flavors are detectable. The finish quickly turns to an expected IPA bitterness that turns dry during prolonged tastings

Appearance: Pours slightly hazy golden with tons or carbonation and bubbles in the glass (looks like champagne), a huge frothy off-white head and lots of lacing
Aroma: Guava, citrus and fruity
Taste: Tropical fruit, citrus, mild bisquity with a bitter pine finish
Very nice and drinkable.

Hazy amber beer, little white head. Nice hops and guava nose. Crispy palate, dry. Bitterish hops - bitter orange marmalde that is wonderfully offset by good guava. Creamy malt base. Unapologetically bitter finish. Another cracking inventive beer from Shorts.

Wow. I didn’t known what to expect on this one. Clear honey color with white head that disappeared quickly. Tropical fruit salad smell, which sounds weird but true. Sweet fruity taste that ends bittering, maybe a hint of bubblegum. Very interesting offering and actually very enjoyable.

Bottle. Caramel color with a slight haze and grayish/beige head. Almost all guava and strawberry aromas. Tart guava that finishes with some piney hops. Finishes bitter.

Bottle through trade. Pour has a golden orange color with a ring of off white head on the glass. Aroma has guava, pepper, citrus, and some malt. Mouth feel is medium light and the carbonation medium low. Flavor has real guava, citrus, mild bitterness, and a lingering finish. Interesting mix of fruit and hops.

12oz bottle-thanks to jtclockwork for sharing–pours a dissipating off white head with trailing lace and gold/amber color. Aroma is guava, pine needle/rye, tropical fruit-pineapple/lemon zest, some light/medium malt. Taste is grapefruit rind/pine/guava, secondary light/medium malt. Good effervescence. Taste different from nose.

Pours a bright orange with amber hues. A small white head that stays as a ring the whole way down with spotty lacing. Aromas of tropical fruits (guava!), other citrus fruits (lemon zest), some pine, rosemary and faint malts. Taste is very juicy. Lots of tropical hop flavors coming across a medium body of sweet malts. Very nice finish balanced with hop bitterness (slightly astringent/soapy) and the the guava/malt sweetness to round it out.

Bottled on date is scratched away but this was bottled no more than three weeks ago, I know, so I’m not concerned about that. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass. Priced at Short’s usual $2 for a single bottle. Appearance: Reasonably hazy, and even more hazy if you get all the goodness from the bottom of the bottle into the glass. About a finger of a soapy head that dies down pretty quickly. A bit of patchy lacing. It looks alright. I tend to nit-pick -- I much prefer the look of a creamier head over a soapy one. Minor annoyance. The bottle itself looks quite a bit different from Short’s other stylings, but it still stands out a bit, despite it being a mostly dark logo. Maybe the art was done by somebody over at Half Acre for this one? In any event, pretty decent looking all-around. Smell: Yeah, guava. Smells really tropical as you’d expect. Guava/mango/peach aroma more so than a kind of pineapple. Not much else to mention as it really just smells tropical. I don’t get earthiness or really any malt in the aroma. Taste/feel: Mild/moderate carbonation with actually an unexpectedly quite thin mouthfeel.. that’s the first thing I notice, and that’s my biggest knock on Freedom of ’78. The flavor follows up what was on the nose, with loads of guava and mango with only a slight bit of pine on the finish. Finishes pretty dry as well. Not nearly as bitter as many Short’s IPAs seem to be either, which is a good change of pace. Freedom of ’78 is a good beer. It’s relatively one-note with a guava/mango sort of flavor and aroma going on with only the slightest pine aftertaste, but it works. It’s way too drinkable. It drinks like it’d be about 5% rather than 7%. Again, low sort of carbonation, but my only real problem with this beer is its mouthfeel... it could use a bit more heft. Regardless, this is a delicious IPA.

Tap at CK Diggs, Mi. Pours light, slightly hazy orange with a white creamy head. Aroma is wow, that’s a lot of guava, really sweet, mango, tropical fruits, orange. Flavor is guava heavy, nice medium heavy bitterness, orange rind, there’s a caramel malt backbone, sort of chewiness to it almost. It’s really solid. I actually like this a lot. One of my favorite offerings from Short’s so far.

Damn you, badnews - beat me out for first rating. Anyway, 12 ounce bottle purchased from salut in kzoo, mich. Fantastic aroma, but the taste is a little watery. Definitely not too bad at all though.
