Good Humans was created to showcase one of Briess Malting Company’s new malt varieties. Originally planned as a one-time thing, it quickly became one of our big successes. Good Humans is a Double Brown Ale made with Carabrown Malt, and then dry hopped with Simcoe hops. The brew has sweet malty esters that are met by huge toasted caramel and toffee flavors. The finish is dry with a bouquet of hops.

It’s like everything.... But in the same thing... One of those rare moments when it really is good to be human.

A nice mesh of styles. Brown ale meets IPA. Flavors of citrus hops, toffee, caramel and cider. Undertones of oranges, nutmeg and cinnamon. Nicely carbonated.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with minimal head or lacing. Aroma of coffee, chocolate and alcohol. Taste of coffee notes, chocolate notes, and floral hops. Reminds me more of a porter or stout than a Brown but a decent beer. ----Hophaze out

Pours a mahogany color with a foamy white head. Aroma is caramel, chocolate, toffee, and hops. Flavor is malty, toasty, sweet caramel, toffee, some chocolate, and light bitterness. I really enjoyed this.

Moderately dark brown/amber appearance, small eggshell head on aggressive pour. Nose is coffee, chocolate, toffee with mild floral hops and some boooze. Taste is way less hoppy than I was expecting for a dry hopped imperial brown/american strong ale. Booze, chocolate, and floral notes on palate. Finish is a bit off sweet. Not what I was expecting, but drinkable. OK, but would not buy it again.

(Short’s Good Humans) Bottle 330 ml, served into a snifter. Brown colour on the body, small tan head, thin, collapsing quickly and leaving big bubbles behind. Intense aroma, lots of chocolate and vanilla,, light alcohol, cocoa, some ripe red fruits. Taste is malty, caramel, toffee, again lots of chocolate, some lighter vanilla, alcohol, chestnuts, some hops too. Medium body, soft carbonation. Mildly dry palate. Very good!

Murky brown, neat ringed eggshell head. Musty spice, wee bit burn. Neat brassiness throughout, hops are a bit dusty but let’s the malt sweetness gasp through. Fairly flat, creamy and a little bitter bite towards the finish. Linger is neat spicy sweet. Bottle.

Shared 12 oz. bottle poured to snifters, showing a cloudy, brownish copper color, with a modest hat of tan, froth & bubbles, and spots of lacing. The aroma intro was very earthy, with a fleeting, vegetal hint, roasted scent as cocoa, then toffee & caramel sweetness. The taste was similar, and moderately bitter, with a medium body, fair carbonation, somewhat hidden alcohol, and a touch of wheat or flake-like creaminess that livened the mouthfeel. Improved nicely after the questionable start.

Bottle: Deep, deep amber & brown with an ecru head that leaves respectable lacing behind. Aroma loaded with chocolate wheat, rich caramel, & burnt brown sugar with an overture of floral hops & delicate pine resins bursting in & out. Like a hopped up, rich brown ale. (That’s the point, right?) Strong nutty flavor, backed with cocoa beans, toffee, & roasted hazelnuts, intertwined with roses, pine leaves, & floral hops. Bitterness hits mid-palate, eventually blunted by a soft, malty sweetness leading to a finish of caramel, dry cocoa powder, & roasted nuts. Hint of citrus peel, too. Strange brew? Maybe. IPA? Brown ale? Why not both? I can see why this is a polarizing brew, but I really enjoyed it.
