28th December 2011 Hazy red - amber beer. Tidy pale tan head. Light crisp palate. Sweetish dry malt - toffee. Bubblegum esters underneath with subtle dark fruits for company. Minerally dry finish. Quite well joined up and despite the dryness - drinkable.

Bottle... Dark, burnt orange ale with a small, frothy, manila head. Fantastic retention. Toasty, grainy, spicy bouquet – clove and fallen apples stand out. Medium-bodied and lightly creamy with airy carbonation. The flavor is fruity, lightly spicy and mildly tangy with a touch of malic acid. Spicy, tangy finish. Refreshing. Bottle courtesy of pantanap!

Previous rater nailed it! Apple jacks. Flavor is apple, honey, light beer, malty. Pretty boring and not something I would revisit.

A: The beer pours a dark amber color with a rather large off-white head.
S: Reeks of metal. There is a little bit of apple and cider aroma, maybe some bready malt. There’s a little bit of toffee and caramel, too. A few yeast esters and spicy phenolics.
T: Lots of yeast and spice notes with a fairly subtle apple and cider flavor. The intense metal flavor is also there. Very minimal malt/toffee/caramel flavor.
M: Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation.
O: Just an awful combination of metal and cider.

On tap at Sunset for their Shorts event prior to EBF. Pours a hazy dirty brown, definitely cider looking. Toast and sweet, caramel apples and apple peel notes. Nice hop notes and a tannic touch as well. Apple peels, and a slightly rotting apple flavor.

Bottle:   Deep amber, moreso a burnt brown sugar, thin to moderate sudsy off-white head, little lacing.   Has an old apple sort of aroma, with a bit of bready malts, subtle spices.   Comes across as a very weak Dubbel on the tongue.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, but leaning thin.   Pale bready finish, some apple that to me tastes like its been sliced and browned for a while.   A little spicy on the finish.   Not bad, a little ordinary tho.

12 oz. bottle shared by a Good Samaritan at the pre-Dark Lord Day event at Flossmoor Station, 2012. Pours a cloudy amber color with a small off-white head. Notes of apples, sweet malts, earthy hops, honey, and very mild spices. Medium-bodied, with a surprising bitterness and otherwise smoothness. Mild carbonation.
3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 TheAlum (4289) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - JAN 12, 2011
12 oz bottle from my trip to Michigan. Pours a rich dark amber, fiery orange edges and a touch of haziness. Frothy tannish head sits atop, moderate sized, cakes somewhat and dies to an ok layer, laces ok. Aromas are quite apple cidery with pear and spicy yeast, bready and doughy malts mesh apple cider and a spicy Belgian ale, some darker toffee moves in, light florals, and more apples. Caramel, biscuits, honey moves in with a touch of vanilla and more spice. Initial is a bit more mellow, a blend of cider and crisp apples mix with touches of spice and cinnamon, faint sugar, honey is mellow and grows, toffee and biscuits, bready toast, light florals. Lingering vanilla, honey, and touches of spice. The apple cider is nice, the Belgian appeal falls out quite a bit as some richer malts and significant apple spice, vanilla, and honey add the real character. A touch of a dryness creeps in on the backend, not overly sweet, as the cider yeast seems to dry it out in addition to a light spice. Maltiness grows, perhaps a bit nutty, sweet biscuits and touches of toast. Really, for not necessarily being my thing, this beer is quite interesting and provides an interesting balance. Albeit, it you don’t like spice or apple cider, this probably isn’t for you. An interesting blend.. finish brings more dryness, perhaps some estery sweetness in the body, and a weird metallic bite as I get further into the beer... Hmm..

Bottle: The aroma is a strange combination of banana, Belgian yeast, apple, caramel, and faint spice. It pours a transparent dark copper with a small off-white head that leaves behind some spotty lacing. The flavor starts with some light caramel, Belgian yeast, and banana. The finish has some light apple and roasted nuts. Overall, the Belgian yeast isn’t working for me in this combination of flavors. Light-medium bodied with mild carbonation.
