Hopstach typifies the boldness that comes from American hop varieties. The aroma is dominated by fruity ale yeast esters and fragrant grapefruit tones. Initial malt sweetness is low, and citrus fruit and floral hop qualities overpower any other perceived flavors. Aided by the addition of grapefruit zest, the finish is a sharp hop shock that electrifies the mouth, but is not overly bitter.

Poured into a Samuel Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. The appearance on this one is a really hazy yellow color. The head isn’t very big, and doesn’t last long at all. Very little lacing left in the glass as well. Aroma is unbelievable, and one of the best smelling beers I’ve ever whiffed -- massive grapefruit and tropical smells... truly outstanding. Unfortunately, the taste was a bit of a let down. The front of each sip tasted almost exactly like the aroma -- sweet, grapefruity. The rest of the sip and aftertaste though was primarily of bitterness, and it didn’t have me jumping up and down. The carbonation isn’t harsh, but the bitterness in this make it much more of a sipper’s IPA. This site calls it a pale ale, but Hopstache is no doubt an IPA. A fantastic smelling beer, but a slight let down flavor-wise.

Bottle from Michigan. Nose is hop and citrus and body follows. Bit of mild sugar to balance but not much. Smooth acrid feel with citrus rind finish. Decent to good. Would do again. Plus bottle has an uncle Rico lookalike.

Pretty much a "typical" Shorts IPA, which means it’s pretty good. Yes, there is grapefruit but just a taste. Mildly bitter.

Poured from a bottle dated 5/29/2015. Aroma is moderately malty with some cracker malt notes and light toasted bread. Moderate grapefruit aroma with some pine resin and some dank wood notes. A bit of an odd phenolic note similar to decomposing wet grass. Pours a hazy, dull, golden orange with a small, moderately thick white head that exhibits decent retention as it recedes to the edges where it lingers. Moderate lacing and small legs. Flavor starts with a light sweetness and some cracker and light caramel notes. Moderately strong bitterness. Moderate grapefruit notes with some lighter orange and pine resin. A light dank note with some lingering cracker malt character. None of the weird note that was in the aroma. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but grapefruit sculpin is much better. The odd aroma is off putting, but the flavor is better. The flavor is pretty light on the grapefruit zest though.
