COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
• Aromatic earth tonic of the resinous picea and humulus lupulus
• Beer Type: Imperial pilsner brewed with Northern Michigan Blue Spruce needles and healthy doses of high alpha hops

Imperial India Spruce Pilsner is fermented with local, hand-picked blue spruce tips and the quintessential symbol for Joe Short’s love of hops and craft beer. The spruce presence, rooted in historical brewing practices, is enormous and gives the beer a refreshing gin quality. This beer is impressively light bodied, considering the immense spruce flavors and the prodigious additions of hops.

Huge, huge thanks to jale for giving me this bottle just because. Thanks again! Pours a slightly-hazed golden-orange color with a good white head with mild retention time and a slight collar on the way down. The nose is incredible with ginormous amounts of heavy spruce and pine. Really quite awesome. The taste follows down the same path. Not sure how else to describe this other than to say that the spruce character is nearly overwhelming and I absolutely love it. Bitter and resinous, the mouthfeel is killer. I could drink this until my mouth completely dried out. Delicious. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-04-2011

bottle, # 213 of 886, from trade with General Gao. Good aroma, sweet & spice. Spruce, go figure, alot like a well made ginger beer. Clean orangy bronze, ok head, minor lace. Bitter flavor. Lite body, creamy thick mouthfeel, dry finish. Wow, this one held up well. I was thinking it would be ruined, but it held up well, Aroma was big, enjoyable, could get some oxidation in taste, but I guess it was masked by the spruce. really enjoyable. brewed 4/30/07, bottled 5/29 - 30/07

Hazy orange gold pour with a bit of foamy head. Aroma is loads of pine with spicy hops and sweet malt. Flavor is bitter and spicy, lots of resin coming through, and some malt sweetness. Interesting brew.

12 zo bottle courtesy of hopburp. Thanks Mario. Pours a slightly hazy brass color with a small white head that slowly recedes to a fine film. The aroma is distinct with pine, chlorophyll and perfume. The flavor is similar to the nose, loads of green chlorophyll, fresh pine and biter pine resin. The palate is smooth and full with lively carbonation. The finish is long and dry with lingering pine. Overall: Lots of big bold experimental flavors, I dig it.

Bottle pours burnt orange-gold with a white head. Aroma is sweet with burnt caramel and freshly shaved pine planks. Honestly, the intensity of the pine component is somewhat impressive. Overall body is moderate and sticky, starts lightly sweet, and finishes with a dry moderate/heavy pine bitterness.

Lightly hazy orangish pour. Aroma is all christmas trees, rosemary and honey. Flavor starts bitter, hits with a big dose of resin and rosemary then gives way to a lightly honeyed malty sweetness. Nice. Totally unique brew.

Bottle from Ølbutikken. Pours cloudy amber with a huge head. Wonderful piney nose. Strong pine flavours, good, but not over-the-top bitterness, some underlying sweetness. An IPA that dares to be different and hurrah for that.

MiBG Summer Fest 2010: Clean golden hue with some head. Wow, the nose is big pine needles, along with catty and resiny hops, some pale malts and earthy yeast esters. The taste has a twangy fruit tone and is quite piney but honestly does not display much depth, a one trick pony. The pale lager malts and yeast struggle to find any room for themselves. The mouth feel is lively and aggressive, some moderate alcohol and medicinal character does show. Simply okay, was not all that impressed and a bit of a let down.

Served on draft at the Michigan Summer Beerfest, 2010, as part of RBSG festivities. Pours a hazy peach color with a thin head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of very big spruce notes. The taste is bitter and woody spruce notes. Medium bodied. Very bitter. Quite nice.
