COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
• Aromatic earth tonic of the resinous picea and humulus lupulus
• Beer Type: Imperial pilsner brewed with Northern Michigan Blue Spruce needles and healthy doses of high alpha hops

Imperial India Spruce Pilsner is fermented with local, hand-picked blue spruce tips and the quintessential symbol for Joe Short’s love of hops and craft beer. The spruce presence, rooted in historical brewing practices, is enormous and gives the beer a refreshing gin quality. This beer is impressively light bodied, considering the immense spruce flavors and the prodigious additions of hops.

Poured a clear amber color with a small, white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of spruce, pine, grass, and a bit of floral hops. Taste was dank, resinous, spruce, pine, citrus fruits, caramel, toasted malts, and a dry, alcohol finish.

Bottle. [Drikkeriget Grand Shorts Imperial Series tasting, thanks to Jeppe for another great session] Another very unique beer and my first spruce beer. What became clear was the use of the word “pine” in regards to hoppy aroma is all misleading. This was how pine, pinewood, pine needle etc smells like. Average creamy off-white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Cloudy golden yellow color. Aroma of true pine tree – pinewood, also some sweet pine like notes. Grassy, citrus and floral notes could also be picked up. Over the palate came bitter pine that wasn’t to pleasant. The aroma was fantastic, but I did not enjoy drinking this one. Full bodied with a soft carbonation. Heavy bitter harsh flavor with some counter sweetness. Earthy and piney lingering bitter finish.

Cloudy orange colour with a white head. Hoppy, piney aroma with fruity notes and a light soapy touch. Hoppy, piney and quite dry taste.

(Bottle) Pours hazy golden. The aroma holds woodsy and almost perfume smelling spruce up front with undertones of citric and light floral hops, sweet toasted malt alongside a peachy, tropical fruitiness. The flavour is medium sweet and medium bitter with notes of fresh spruce up front. Citric hops, fruits, perfume and sweet malt. The mouthfeel is clean and peppery numbing from the spruce. Medium bodied.

This brew is very niche. Which,of course, if you a Shorts fan...you appreciate. It’s aroma is quite "green" with the fresh cut spruce tips. I would go as far as saying that it has a full bodied flavor that fills in the voids beautifully. Finish is a robust hops and earthy taste with the pine throughout.

Poured cloudy, color more of a hefe or pale than a pilz. Earthy mountain pine on the nose. The taste is crisp, resiny pine. Surprising beer. It has a little lemon on the front of the palate. Interesting beer, white head diminished pretty quick.

From notes. Finally getting around to adding beers from the Ypsi Summer Beerfest! Enjoyed on July 25. The pour is a nice clear golden color with some decent white head and a small amount of lacing. The aroma is heavy on pine resin and a little bitter booze on the end. I don’t really expect a lot from a pilsner, and the flavors of it are all that dominate. The flavor is just like it sounds. There is a lot of pine resin and spruce. It does seem like I’m drinking a tree. There is a little bit of a malt profile on the back end, but for the most part it’s big, piney, and very resin-based. The mouth feel is a little light, but there is a decent carbonation and a lingering bitter resin aftertaste.

Bottle at the 2007 GABF: Pours a slightly hazy golden with a nicely-lacing frothy white head. Woodsy grapefruity nose has some pale malty notes. Body starts with a fairly full, sweet caramel maltiness and big fresh citrusy and piny bittering hops with some spruce character. Finishes bitter and crisp with some alcoholic warmth. Another tasty and unique offering from Shorts.
