Short’s Kind Ale a.k.a. Harvest Ale, is a seasonal beer made each fall to celebrate a successful growing season. True to tradition, we commemorate the earth’s agricultural environment by using freshly picked hops to “wet hop” this brew. Straight from the fields on Leelanau Peninsula, local hops impart a mellow earthiness to this ale that lead to moderate bitter tones and a subtle sweetness in the finish.

Kind Ale was first brewed as a single batch at our Elk Rapids production facility in September of 2009. The label art for Kind Ale is a picture of Tony Hansen holding up some of the first ever usable mature hops grown in Northern Michigan. The first year the beer was brewed, Joe Short and Tony Hansen visited hop fields on Old Mission Peninsula to watch the hops get picked, before loading them into their truck and personally driving them back to Elk Rapids to brew with that day.

Pours an orange-ish amber, with a thin white head. Aromas a stinky cat piss, pine, grapefruit and sweet malt. Taste is bitter citrus. Soapy finish. Decent.

Meh. Piney hops and very low on citrus. Earthy with some fruit. Many other better options but certainly not a drain pour. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

The more I drink this one the more I like it. Tropical citrus Upfront. Nice clean drinkable hop flavor. The hop flavor really hangs around after the sip and sits on the tongue. Nice stuff. Be good on a hot day.

UPDATED: MAR 24, 2014 Bottle: Perfect amber-copper color with exceptional clarity, the long lasting, creamy beige head leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is full of fresh, pungent hops, grapefruit, mild citrus, and some herbaceous pepper notes. Fresh, wet, a little dank. Taste is heavier on the spicy, herbaceous white pepper notes with some ash and leaves. Bitter grapefruit rinds and very light cracker malts... Sweetness is at an all time low, here. Finish is spicy, lingering bitterness with some mild dank and oily pine resins. Thin bodied, high carbonation, light palate stickiness. Pretty good, but wouldn’t be a sessionable contender due to high back-end bitterness.

My first wet hopped beer. Appearance: Poured with a surprising two-finger, creamy head. The lacing lasts from beginning to end. The beer is slightly translucent and orange. Probably this beer’s highlight. Smell: It smells pretty good, but it doesn’t rock my socks off. Hops. Mostly of the earthy variety. Pretty much bursting with the hops. Taste/feel: Almost all hops from beginning to end. This beer gets more and more bitter throughout the sip... I really didn’t mind it that much though. I’m not familiar with wet hopped beers -- as I said, this is my first -- but it could have used a bit more malt. There was some spice and a touch of malt maybe at the end, but not quite enough. The feel of this one makes it pretty drinkable... appropriate for the taste. It’s fairly thin, but not bad. Overall, meh. It has a good bit of hop flavor, but there’s just not enough malts in here, and the bitterness is a bit too much for me. This beer was best enjoyed -- for ME -- with a small bag of munchies. Funyuns, to be exact. A decent offering by Short’s.
