Short’s Kind Ale a.k.a. Harvest Ale, is a seasonal beer made each fall to celebrate a successful growing season. True to tradition, we commemorate the earth’s agricultural environment by using freshly picked hops to “wet hop” this brew. Straight from the fields on Leelanau Peninsula, local hops impart a mellow earthiness to this ale that lead to moderate bitter tones and a subtle sweetness in the finish.

Kind Ale was first brewed as a single batch at our Elk Rapids production facility in September of 2009. The label art for Kind Ale is a picture of Tony Hansen holding up some of the first ever usable mature hops grown in Northern Michigan. The first year the beer was brewed, Joe Short and Tony Hansen visited hop fields on Old Mission Peninsula to watch the hops get picked, before loading them into their truck and personally driving them back to Elk Rapids to brew with that day.

My first wet hopped beer. Appearance: Poured with a surprising two-finger, creamy head. The lacing lasts from beginning to end. The beer is slightly translucent and orange. Probably this beer’s highlight. Smell: It smells pretty good, but it doesn’t rock my socks off. Hops. Mostly of the earthy variety. Pretty much bursting with the hops. Taste/feel: Almost all hops from beginning to end. This beer gets more and more bitter throughout the sip... I really didn’t mind it that much though. I’m not familiar with wet hopped beers -- as I said, this is my first -- but it could have used a bit more malt. There was some spice and a touch of malt maybe at the end, but not quite enough. The feel of this one makes it pretty drinkable... appropriate for the taste. It’s fairly thin, but not bad. Overall, meh. It has a good bit of hop flavor, but there’s just not enough malts in here, and the bitterness is a bit too much for me. This beer was best enjoyed -- for ME -- with a small bag of munchies. Funyuns, to be exact. A decent offering by Short’s.

Thanks Mike! From notes - 10/23/2012 - I think I enjoyed this one a lot more than others. Not sure why, but I thought this was a really enjoyable hoppy IPA. Pours a hazed bright gold with a nose of light grapefruit and citrus. Hoppy up front, fairly clean and light. Flavors come through nice with juicy grapefruit and hops. Grassy and fresh, wet citrus, all over.. Quite smooth and drinkable. Nice medium body with good lacing.

This beer sucks. Overly bitter and no other real flavor. Makes me mad to drink. Just astringent bitter water and nothing else. blah DP.

Pours a nice copper orange with almost no head. Nose and taste are dank, oily, and all earthy hops. I know at this point this beer is a touch faded, but that is making it incredibly drinkable! Very nice offering. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12oz bottle thanks to northernbrews, thanks Jeff! Pours a clear dark golden orange with a bubbly white head and spotty lacing, aroma is actually kind of sweet with a little bit of citrus mixed in, the flavor has a nice hop touch on the front end with a bitter finish, seems a little harsh on the front end and I wish it finished like the front with a little bit of fruit, bitterness comes through, all around solid though.

Medium gold pour, half inch offwhite head. Scent is juicy citrus and floral hops. Flavor is really smooth and leans a bit hoppy. Medium mouth feel, medium-high carbonation. Grainy hops, citrus and bitter. Finish is bitter and reminded me a bit of sake with a little more substance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle pour to shaker. Aroma: fresh leafy greens. Taste: bitter dry grass with touch of honey. This beer oozes with freshness.

Pours a cloudy golden orange color with a small amount of head. Aroma is very citrusy with hints of flowers and tropical fruit. Taste is very dry and citrusy. Surprisingly bitter for a fresh hop ale too. There is a decent amount of malt flavor to give it some back bone. Finish is very dry and hoppy too. Somewhat oily mouthfeel is good. This beer is just ok overall. Too dry and too bitter to enjoy as a wet hop ale. Flavor is decent overall though.

Bottle: The aroma consists of sweet citrus, grass, and a touch of grapefruit. It pours a mostly transparent amber with a touch of haze and a small white head that quickly fades to a thin film outlined by a slightly thicker ring. The flavor starts with a quick dose of citrus with a touch of tropical fruits. The finish has moderate grass and lighter grapefruit. It’s light bodied with soft carbonation. Overall, solid...but iI prefer my IPAs less grassy and more citrus and grapefruit.
