Short’s Kind Ale a.k.a. Harvest Ale, is a seasonal beer made each fall to celebrate a successful growing season. True to tradition, we commemorate the earth’s agricultural environment by using freshly picked hops to “wet hop” this brew. Straight from the fields on Leelanau Peninsula, local hops impart a mellow earthiness to this ale that lead to moderate bitter tones and a subtle sweetness in the finish.

Kind Ale was first brewed as a single batch at our Elk Rapids production facility in September of 2009. The label art for Kind Ale is a picture of Tony Hansen holding up some of the first ever usable mature hops grown in Northern Michigan. The first year the beer was brewed, Joe Short and Tony Hansen visited hop fields on Old Mission Peninsula to watch the hops get picked, before loading them into their truck and personally driving them back to Elk Rapids to brew with that day.

Medium gold pour, half inch offwhite head. Scent is juicy citrus and floral hops. Flavor is really smooth and leans a bit hoppy. Medium mouth feel, medium-high carbonation. Grainy hops, citrus and bitter. Finish is bitter and reminded me a bit of sake with a little more substance. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a golden-orange with a foamy white head. Aroma is pine and citrus, and flavor is similar. More dry than sweet, with some bitterness. A solid IPA, if not a very memorable one.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a very slightly hazy golden orange with foamy eggshell head that slowly dissipates into sticky lacing. Smells of piney and citrusy hops with a bittersweet backbone. Tastes like it smells with a medium-bodied mouthfeel. A solid fresh-hopped IPA.

12 oz bottle: Aroma has got a nice pungent hop aroma with grapefruit and resin notes. Appearance is a cloudy golden with a thick white head that diminishes quickly. Taste has got a nice raw hop, very green kind of taste. medium to heavy bitterness and lightly sweet. Palate is medium bodied sticky texture with average carbonation and bitter aftertaste. Overall, Decent stuff but it won’t blow you away. Cheers!

Bottle. Pours a hazy gold with a long lasting, creamy, off-white head. floral and resinous hops, dankness and malt in the taste and aroma. A well balanced bitterness throughout. Just how a wet hopped beer should be.

The Kind Ale pours a partly cloudy a slightly orange yellow with a medium beige head that lasts a brief while. The aroma is citrus and floral. The flavor is citrus and floral with the floral hops remaining quite bitter in the aftertaste. Overall this is a pretty nice beer.

This is my first harvest ale and it’s not bad. I’m not sure what the difference between it and a normal ale. It might be a little smoother. It’s refreshing and orangey.
