This beer demands respect and respect it will have. Imperial Oatmeal Stout with cocoa and molasses. It is very strong and possesses rare flavor combinations which can overload even the most experienced beer connoisseur. Capture every bit of its warmth and wisdom, as it will demand all of your attention.

Cool ass bottle hooked up by Derek. Thrown in the Del Mar Doom w/ K, J, and Simon. This was some seriously good shit...almost shockingly good. Was a bit blown away by its low avg and lack of ratings. Anyway, nose was a milk chocolate blast...flavor was the most unbelievable use of chocolate I’ve ever seen in a beer. Not the phony b/s ... straight up potent choco goodness. Blew me away. Long lingering, DEEP bitter chocolate and super long roast and dry finish. I can only imagine how amazing this must have been fresh? Or did the mellowing help? This was very, very good .. shocker. I haven’t encountered a stout like this in a long, long time. Forgot to note the intense amount of cocoa nib sludge - this makes DL sludge look weak!

Pours a murky dark brown, no head at all. Aroma of coffee and dark fruits. Taste follows with added caramel. This is a very tasty stout. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750mL bottle from 2006. Poured deep brown with a velvety cap of tan head. The aroma picked up molasses, toasted coconut, and burnt chocolates.. dry peppery alcohol and oxidation accented.. lovely warm cocoa on the back.. interesting stuff. The flavor found a warm bed of rolled oats and molasses at the core.. alcohol was aggressive and pervasive through the drink.. figs, black currants, and burnt, bitter cocoa powder around.. peppery and boozy on the long, belly-warming finish. Heavy-bodied, grainy, and very roasty on the palate.. too sharp, and a little thinner than I wanted.. this was alright, but I wonder if it was better a few years ago.

Indeed this beer is a mystery. Current bottling is 12% so I doubt that this beer is retired as its available right now. Pours a thin looking deep brown yet with an enormous head. aromas of dark fruit and chocolate. Flavors is right off the bat chocolate covered raisins to an almost cloying degree but soon tapers off into a creamy smooth chocolate raisin plum smoke flavor. not bad really but something is lacking in the body. lots of vanilla present with a large bourbon character.

Brown pout. Tan head. Chocolate, marshmallow and coffee notes flavor is loaded with chocolate, Toasted marshmallow and coffee. Nice!!!

Big ups to jarspag for bringing this rare vintage bottle to my place in Del Mar for the 6/27/09 D-METAL with Katie and Simon. Diarrhea glass of doom! The beer poured out some serious sludge at the bottom of the bottle. Other than that, first couple glasses poured with a black center and light brown edges. Some frothy tan bubbles with specks of sediment. Great aroma of molasses, cocoa nib, a touch of bread and packed with milk chocolate. Beautiful flavor that is slammed with more chocolates...and more chocolate on top of that. Probably one of few beers I’ve had that really makes you think you’re drinking melted chocolate decadence. A base of malty sweetness follows with a mild roast and touch of smoke. Huge body that coats the palate with lasting tones of molasses and warming alcohol. We had no idea what year this was brewed, but it seemed to have some age. I’m a huge chocolate fanatic, thus the discrepancy between my rating and the average. Thanks again J!

Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a tan head. Roasted malt, chocolate hints, chewy molasses and a surprisingly light etoh warming.

Bottle #161/500. Sea O’Floydster epic tasting, post PP Belgian Fest. Thanks Carlos for bringing this bottle. Molasses, carob and vinous qualities are strongly present. Some odd astringency is noticed as well. Some oxidation. Finish is meh. Too dry, without the rich, encompassing body that I was hoping for. I really wish I had tried this fresh. The bottle we opened was a let down. Not horrid, but not great. Maybe the age, maybe the specific bottle, maybe just the beer itself. Still, I’m really happy I got to try this - I’d been looking for this for a long time as a huge fan of Short’s, so this was definitely one of my white whales. Thanks again Carlos!

Bottle @ Post Belgian Fest killer tasting dubbed Sea O’Floydster, with a load of cool people including Cquiroga, floydster, seaoflament and many others. Bottle from Carlos. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is sweet with some choco. Taste is sweet and chocolate a bit too sweet and bitter.

Sample thanks to fogdog. Thanks Kevin. Pours deep dark garnet with a thin tan head. The aroma is a nice mixture of chocolate, caramel, highly roasted malts and a bit of toffee all blended together very nicely. The taste starts off with a coffee note and then quickly becomes roasty, molasses, more coffee and chocolate. By midway it picks up a sense of the alcohol and a layer of earthiness. It all blends together with harmony.
