3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: OCT 30, 2014 Bottle: 2013 release. Thick, inky black pour with only some deep brown near the top. Nice tan head that froths up to a finger & settles to a collar rather quickly. Aroma is very big; dark, bittersweet chocolate, coffee beans, sweet brown sugar & thick molasses, mild oats & creamy, milky sweetness. Good amount of roasted maltiness through & through. Taste includes roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate & cocoa powder, toasted oats, a light finish of coffee, & some sweet brown sugar & molasses notes. Dry, roasty cocoa powder finish with some underlying creamy sweetness & oats. Very nice Short’s brew!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size dark brown head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet residual sugars and molasses notes with some dark chocolate notes is pretty intense but not overwhelmingly so. Taste is a great mix between some molasses, residual sugars some black chocolate notes with a light dry bitter finish. Body is quite full but doesn’t have the smooth texture I was expecting. Good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Very enjoyable imperials stout that is pretty sweet but not overwhelmingly so with a good depth of complexity.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Black-bodied with a bright brown head, this looks like a seriously-roasted ale. It looks heavy and bitter, and the nose proves it. A soft, sweet, roasted malt aroma impresses at first snout, with a delicious touch of cocoa or baking chocolate sealing the delicious deal. It impresses even before your taste buds have a chance to register the beer, leaving a soft, dense, but brightly rich and almost powdery, spritey feeling on the lips. Then, once it’s in the mouth, it drowns the taste buds, cheeks, and the roof of the mouth with a thick, oily skin of alcohol and rich, bitter, heavily roasted malts (and a touch of soft, gooey oats).
The finish is strong and bitter with roasted malts and cocoa, with a sweetness helping to ease the bitterness a little, then the softness of the oats carrying you back down to safety like a parachute deploying after a rocket launch. With this imperial oatmeal stout you’re actually allowed more of an opportunity to be slathered in bitterness, which is something I prefer from the style. The last thing I want is an imperial oatmeal stout that’s soft and malty all-around with no bite. That’s like being overweight with a push-over attitude. This beer is like being overweight with a feisty attitude. Much more enjoyable!

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at Dan's. The pour is a nice black with a thicker tan head that doesn't really fade out and leaves pretty good lace. The aroma is light. It's got a good cocoa presence, and a nice bitterness. It almost smells like chocolate milk. I'm not getting any molasses or roasty malt. The flavor is a little better. It's a bit more bitter with a decent cocoa presence and a little more malt. The molasses again fails to pop through, but there is a better stout character with the bitterness and chocolate. The mouth feel is a little thin, but there is a decent carbonation to help it out. The aftertaste is quite dry, and bitter. I like it

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
The Mystery Stout pours black with dark tan head that lasts a fair while. The aroma is earthy chocolate with a bit of bread. the flavor is dominated by the chocolate up front with enough room for floral toast flavors to sneak in, but the bittersweet chocolate hangs on well into the aftertaste. Overall this is a decent beer.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
On tap at Pete’s Place. A dark black color with a light cream colored head. A strong coffee aroma with a back hint of chocolate. For a high abv stout there isn’t a ton of flavor. A slight alcohol lingering. I wouldn’t have ever guessed its 10%. Very drinkable for the style.

From a bottle. Solid, definitely a big boy. But fairly well balanced. Slight metallic twang.

Bottle from Shorts winter 12 pack. Pours black. Small dark tan head. Mild roast aroma. Big flavors of oats, chocolate, and coffee. Good thick palate. Hardy beer with a nice hardy mouthfeel. You never know with Shorts. They bottle a ton of beers and sometimes it is hit or miss. In this case they have a hit. Very much enjoyed. By far my favorite from the seasonal 12 pack.
