3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a fairly standard and non-descript amber/brownish color with a small amount of head that leaves minimal lacing. Aroma is highly roasty with some strong malty notes coming through as well. Flavor is somewhat similar but with a distinct bitter hop presence that becomes the primary flavor. Mouthfeel is nice - smooth and not overly sticky.
Decent beer, but not something I’d necessarily seek out again.

12oz bottle from my Secret Santa deyholla - thanks, Derek! A crisp, prickly golden pour with a thin but very lively carbonation. Very sharp spice in the nose, with dry hops complementing the aggressive rye additions nicely. Flavor is some enticing cross between an extremely dry-hopped Belgian singel, an IPA, and good gin. Slightly slick palate, but overall a classically idiosyncratic Shorts creation.

On tap at the brewery. Dark golden color with small white head and nice lacing. Light aroma of dry malt and light hops. Flavor is rich and hoppy with a very present, dirty bitterness, piney, dry caramel malt. Medium to light body with light carbonation. Tasty but astringent at the same time.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap: Big citrus hop aroma with lots of grapefruit, rye, and light pineapple. It pours a transparent amber with a small white head that leaves behind excellent sheets of lacing. The flavor starts with a quick dose of sweet citrus that quickly turns to tons of grapefruit hops and moderate spicy rye. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Tap at the ’08 MBG Summerfest. Tannish gold pour. Very dry pine, subtle caramel malt, touch of grapefruit, spice and pungent peppery rye. More like a very dry DIPA. Medium body.

7-22-06 MBG. Dark copper with chill haze, minimal head. Big rye nose, but not much else. Flavor has a very nice spicy rye, spicy hop balance. Tropical fruit esters show as it warms, hard to pinpoint though. I guessed mango, others mention Very clean and basic in a way, but highly sessionable.

Alpha King Competition 2006: Poured a dark amber color with an off-white head. The aroma start nice and hoppy with some toffee and bready malt notes. But there seemed to be an off smell. A little plasticy. Tart piney flavor on the finish after a caramel malty start.
