Sustenance Black Beer, classically referred to as a Schwartz beer, is a dark American lager brewed in the spring. Soft and sweet on the palate, the roasted, dark caramel grains lend to satisfying drinking experience, while lager yeast creates a refreshing thirst-quenching sensation. This combination provides a rich, full-flavored, light bodied brew.

Thanks to the Tampa Crew for sharing. Pours brown with a tan head. Nose is roast, spice, chocolate, licorice, a hint of smoke, and dark stuff. Flavor is some dry roasted coffee along with the flavors in the aroma. Light to medium body and very surprising for a Schwarz.

UPDATED: DEC 5, 2012 Bottled. Pours clear black with a brownish glow and a small tan head. Fair lacing. Nose of roasted malt chocolate and notes of coffee + bourbon. Sweet flavor with chocolate, roasted coffee and bourbon. Medium to full bodied, creamy to oily texture and soft carbonation. Ends up more dry and slightly bitter. Quite complex for a schwartz beer.★★★

Bottle. A dense, two-finger dark beige head forms over reddish dark brown body. Nice lacings. Roasted, almost burnt aroma with a spiced and hoppy touch. Some dark berries too. It’s a bit too carbonated I think, medium to full-bodied and quite smooth. Lightly acidic, with roasted malts, dried fruits and a pleasant bitterness. Lasting finish with raisin notes and a good bitterness that lasts, of both the hoppy and roasted kind. Certainly a nice one, maybe not the most true to style schwarzbier, but good. 120324

Bottle from Cask Pub & Kitchen and drunk at home. Black beer lasting beige head. It’s a toasty roasty chocolate type beer. It’s half decent, quite drinkable and I like it.

This Short’s beer has a black-brown pour (it is a dark ruby when held up to a light) with a one to two finger tan head that recedes to a broken cover and ring after a few minutes, and left some lacing on the glass as I drank, there were aromas of dark caramel, dark toast, dry chocolate, roasted malt, licorice and a dark honey sweetness with a little vanilla, the beer had flavors of dark bread, licorice, some roasted malt sweetness and little notes of dry bitter chocolate, finish has barely a bite to it but there is a little bitterness, licorice and earthy mint run along on the palate after each drink, has a medium mouth feel, I thought this beer had more licorice and sweetness than the other Schwarzbiers I had tried, I do not mind a little licorice but more than that is too much for me, so, my rating will reflect how much I enjoyed this beer, it’s not the beer, it is me, if you like licorice, you will more than likely prefer this beer more than I.
