COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sustenance Black Beer, classically referred to as a Schwartz beer, is a dark American lager brewed in the spring. Soft and sweet on the palate, the roasted, dark caramel grains lend to satisfying drinking experience, while lager yeast creates a refreshing thirst-quenching sensation. This combination provides a rich, full-flavored, light bodied brew.

On tap at the brewpub. Black pour with a brown head. Aroma of roasted aromas, chocolate, coffee, licorice, vanilla. The taste is malty with roasted grains, burnt and dark bitter chocolate. Smooth creamy finish with a hint of raisin. Joe knows Schwarzbier!

Bottled, large sample. Dark brown color, medium frothy brown head. Aroma of chocolate, roast, caramel, earthy and grassy hop. Lots of roast and quite high on bitterness in taste. Fairly dry. High on aroma and taste, but finish is a bit watery and dry, which is actually the only thing that lacks in the beer. Great stuff.

tap at repeal prohibition festival at Schalfly in Maplewood, MO. probably my favorate beer of the festival for sure! pours deep brown/mahogony hue in the light with a soapy beige head. very nice looking beer! chocolate, nuts (almonds) with a hint of vanilla and roast on the nose. flavors of dark chocolate dominate along with roast, char, and nutty notes. slightly chalky feel on the palate, but that didnt detract-pretty common for this style. Very nise for the style-better than Black Bavarian and reminds me alot of Rio Salado’s version way back when it was around. i dig it!

Very dark brown pour -- almost black. Very subtle tan head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, light roast. Some dark fruits. Flavor of licorice, dark chocolate, oreos. I detect a bit of creaminess which makes this taste like an ice cream sandwich. Really delicious. Full mouthfeel, thick texture, nice carbonation. Finishes with chocolate wafers. Easily my fav schwarz ever.

Bottled. Poured deep brown with a spotty cap of medium brown. The aroma reeked of deliciousness.. warm chocolates and molasses surrounded by sweeter mocha, vanilla, and a touch of caramel.. moderate roast throughout.. perfectly balanced. The flavor found more of the molasses and mocha at the semi-sweet, lightly-burnt core.. sweet milky chocolates, vanilla, and a touch of earthy husk around.. finished on the sweet side with a lovely complement of dry-roasted coffee bitterness. Medium-bodied at most, dry, and well-balanced on the palate.. this was one of the easiest-drinkin’ beers I’ve had in a while, and it somehow maintained tubs of character too! I’d love to have this on tap in the basement (seriously.. anybody with a hook-up, please let me know!).

The aroma is sweet and lightly roasted, very typical and right on for the style. The lager pours black rock with a decent dark tan head. The flavor is a crispy dark roasted malty lager with good flavors on a nice body. It ends a bit sweet and very refreshing on the palate.

Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. nose is sharp spices, coffee and banana. Taste is bittersweet with a small amount of salt in the back. Sharp and fizzy with a light body however the taste lingers for a long time after the sip. This was better than expected. What a treat.

More like a black alchemical potion than a beer and what a potion. Medicinal anise with other herbal notes. Something to drink while you’re working on your philosopher’s stone...

Bottle thanks to mibirder. Black witha small-medium light brown head. Aroma is bourbon, caramel, vanilla, coconut; classic bourbon aged beer aroma. Taste is more of the same, medium sweet, with a mild-medium roasted bitterness. Finish is dry with lingering bourbon. Soft-moderate carbonation, medium body. Good stuff.
