3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Heavy and smooth. Flavor of chocolate on the nose and mouth, a bit bitter at the end. Wish there had been a bit more malt in it, but was a tasty beer.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Smooth, with a nice chocolately roasty taste. It wasn’t overly bitter, but smooth like an oatmeal stout. Very enjoyable to drink. Robust chocolate taste, with slight hop bitterness and a nice body.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Ashley’s, Ann Arbor, MI. Rich brown, bordering on black, color with a thin chocolatey tan head. Lots of dark, bittter sweet choclate malt on the nose with hints of caramel, roasted nuts and grains. A medium body and thinly carbonated. Slightly oily texture in the mouth with a dry finish. A unique brew.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at the brewpub. Pitch black, opaque pour with edges of burnt marshmellow and a huge head of deep tan. Loads of chocolate and caramel just waft from the glass, greeting the nose softly and delicately. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. There’s almost a touch of banana creamsickle going on in the flavor, but I’m attributing this to the supple wheat flavors that are hiding in the rich chocolate and mocha flavors. Some minor diacetyl noted, but not buttery enough to be obnoxious. This was the only beer I’ve tried from this brewery that had this problem. Still a disappointment, as the flavors otherwise showed a lot of potential. The wheat adds a really interesting dimension to this beer; it seems to provide the slick, oily mouthfeel that oats often provide, but it adds a light, milky flavor dimension amongst the chocolate and coffee. Not overly roasty. On that note, I would eagerly look forward to trying another batch.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Sample draft from the brewery - quite interesting. From Short’s other brews you’d expect a lot of chocolate in this, but this one’s quite subtle.

Shorts The Chocolate Wheat
Filled 07/07, tried 07/07.
Moderate pour in a mug.
Poured black with brown highlights and a huge frothy mostly lasting brown head.
Smelt of strong dark chocolate, burnt grain.
Taste was upfront strong burnt grain and moderate sweet and sour fruity esters followed by more of the same, but with more subdued sweetness, on a long finish.
Palate was medium bodied, lively carbonated, oily on a slightly dry finish, and moderately astringent.
Overall, this is a great beer. It is a very odd animal but I would definitely drink it again. Great to sip on. I only wish the chocolate was a little bit more present on the palate.
