Humble comfort in every sip
Chocolate Wheat is a Porter brewed with chocolate malt, wheat malt, and well-chosen specialty grains. The combination creates a deep black, full-bodied beer that provides subtle hop flavors and rich malt tones. Chocolate Wheat balances the flavors of roasted caramel, coffee, and chocolate, which ends in a smooth finish.

$2 single poured into a shaker pint (sue me.) Appearance: Pitch black, like youíd figure a stout to be, not necessarily a porter. Two finger tan head looks great on top, but fizzles away quickly. Decent lacing. Pretty good looking beer. Smell: First whiff was great when the head was bubbling away -- almost a chocolate milk aroma. After that went away, itís incredibly light. I pick up a faint metallic note, dark roasted malt, and some chocolate when itís cold, and then just a dark coffee/mocha sort of aroma when it warms up a tick... the metallic note dissipates. Nice. Taste/feel: About spot on. I was worried that this porter would drink like a stout, but it drinks more like its name would indicate. Rather thin and light with a moderate amount of carbonation. Normally Iíd dub this a bad thing, but itís what Iíve grown to expect in a porter. The flavor is solid and interesting, but not overwhelming, which would make this an excellent session option. Plenty of roasted malt, a very pleasant semi-dark chocolate flavor, and sort of coffee and slightly char finish. A very slight bitter finish that makes me just want more, more, more. Well, we have another winner from Shortís. Light, packing some great chocolate flavor, and I love the slight char/ash finish on it. I could see myself picking this up instead of Edmund Fitzgerald, to be honest with you. I just get a more interesting flavor out of this one with the chocolate and essence of coffee with the ash-like finish. More depth of flavor than that brew, in my opinion.

Pours a near-black with a mocha colored head, breaks into a thin cap a lace. Aromas are very warm and roasty. Chocolate pie on the nose. Taste is very rich. Very nice. Cocoa...a bit dry/chalky mouthfeel along with it. The grain bill is fantastic. Cereal, pie crust, graham cracker....more chocolate, but sweeter across the middle...a bit a char...and a mild hop presence to round out the back end. Not too bitter to distract you from the rich body. Very enjoyable beer.

Draft pour. Pitch black color. Thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate and coffee. Palate is thicker, but not heavy. Nice flavor from dark roasting, just a touch of sweetness. Special part of this beer (for an IPA guy like me) is the nice hop finish...not found that often in porters. Is a short term brew so will enjoy it while itís here.

Dark black pour tan head. Fudge and nut aroma. Brownie like taste, fudge, hint of vanilla and hint of hops in the end for a nice finish. Medium body light carbonation. Good stuff.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass; no bottle dating, but was just released. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of big milk chocolate, roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, toast, wheat, floral, herbal, light pine, and roasted/floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and moderate hop notes; with good strength. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, wheat, light coffee, herbal, floral, slight pine, and roasted earthiness. Light herbal/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, wheat, light coffee, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt flavors with a fair amount of hop presence; with good robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice porter. All around good balance and robustness of dark/roasted malt flavors with a fair amount of hop presence; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle: dense, dark brown pour that appears much closer to black once it all reaches the glass; topped with a chunky, Styrofoam looking head, beige-tinted, that leaves a few spots of lacing as it slowly recedes. Aroma is fill of dark chocolate cocoa nibs, light malt roastiness, & a slight coffee bean undercurrent. Waves of rich fudge cake bring in the rear with a sweetness that leans close to residual sugar territory. Taste starts with some sweet bakerís chocolate, but actually has a quite roasty & predominantly bitter mid-palate & finish. A heavy, almost charred roasty character sweeps in with bitter dark cocoa beans, light anise, & a very faint bitter coffee grind flavor that lingers in the aftertaste. Thin for a wheat stout, but this yearís batch has much more body than previous releases. Seems more roasty than usual, too, but I like it. Very nice.

Tap at HopCat in East Lansing. Pours a darker brown, tanish head that fades quickly with no head. The aroma is chocolatey with a hint of malt, not much more. The taste is light. Somewhat present with chocolate, a hint of vanilla, and some malty undertones. The mouth feel is very thin, and the lingering flavor doesnít last long at all
