3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 JCB (3795) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - OCT 19, 2008
750ml from mibirder - thanks, Sean! A shame I didn’t have a chance to sample this when fresh. Even after about 18 months, it’s still fairly robust and hoppy. The deep ruby pour still has impressive carbonation and an above average foamy head. Some strong bitter hops in the nose, but slightly overpowered by boozy heat. Sticky sweet malts with just a hint of roasts in there for backbone. The hops have retained their sweetness and have mostly lost their light floral quality. What you’ve got remaining is a solid American strong ale.

Aroma of hops, with a it of malt too. The beer is amber with nice head. Flavor is of course hoppy, but also balanced with some malt.

From a 750mL Bottle. Mostly hazy, caramel amber colored pour with a finger of tight bubbled ivory head. Big, west coast hop aroma of grapefruit, pine, and pithy lemon peel. There’s a substantial amount of hop character left in the aroma, although it has a plodding, pithy quality to it, presumably from age, rather than a bright freshness it likely displayed at a younger age. Hints of toffee malt sweetness in the background. Medium full bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel with a sticky caramel texture up front. Hop flavors are still pretty decent, although this perception could be clouded by the heaviness of the malt sugars that distort the palate’s vision. A bit herbal and grassy, but there’s still quite a bit of grapefruit and pine that comes through. This is actually holding up remarkably well, but the stickiness of the malt bill suggests it wasn’t remarkably better when fresh.
