4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
After having so many different brews from Short's, I finally tried the Magician. What was I waiting for?! Delicious! It drinks like an amber ale, I feel, even though it's classified as a London style ale.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a murky reddish-brown with a white ring. Sweet malty aroma, with dark fruits, a yeast bite, citrus, wood. Taste is quite sweet, with malt, brown sugar, dark fruits, grass, wood. Lingering woodsy citrus. Pretty nice.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle: muddled, swampy brown in the center, completely opaque& outlined with some slightly translucent shades of copper; topped with a light khaki head that sifts to a collar in moments. Aroma has plentiful sticky caramel malt, a hint of sugary plums, & some faint metallic tones in the finish. A little heavier tart apple & plum on the palate, almost like a scotch ale, outlined with light residual sugar, caramel malt, a faint medicinal overtone, & almost a cardboard-y vibe in the aftertaste. Doesn’t taste oxidized, just a side effect of the heavy malt, methinks. Not bad, but it’s largely "middle of the pack" & fairly standard for a malt forward ale. Without much hop presence, the malt bill wears your palate down quite quickly.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle at the 15th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 07/16/2011. Clear reddish body with a small frothy off-white head. Slightly tart fruit and caramel aroma. Tart fruit flavor with some caramel. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

2.5 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Okay beer. Dark red, minimal foam on pour. No nose to write home about. Hops seem to overpower the malts... not bad tasting, but a loose definition of a red.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had Shorts the Magician on draft, ample bitterness, malt, and full bodied. Honestly thought this was more of an Imperial Red than an Amber beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Thanks to Pawola22 for sending me this bottle. Reddish-amber pour with an off-white head. The aroma is full of toffee and biscuit malt. The flavor is similar with some sweet toffee and biscuit malt, as well as a hint of light orange peel. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

2.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Not a bad beer- definitely differs from my usual brew. Also not for everyday consumption. Most prominently a raisin taste, also notes of cereal, chocolate, with a kind of carob aftertaste, minimal head, tan foam, hazy, red, medium sweetness, lively carbonation, oily feel. Not a bad brew- though the artwork is atrocious and embarrassing- something a young Trekkie might draw on his geometry notebook.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle. Chocolate, roasty nutty, and caramel aroma. Deep amber with a small beige head. Charred toast, nutty caramel, and roasty bitter flavor, as well as some tartness. A strange collections of flavors that don’t quite come together for me. Medium body, soft carbonation. I agree with others about most of Shorts’ label art., and this one is especially bad.
