COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is brewed exclusively for Trattoria Stella of Traverse City. We call it a pale ale brewed like an IPA (India pale ale) with all the hops but not the alcoholic strength. It’s copper color comes from toasted caramel malts, which provide a sweet malt character to support the heavy doses of bitter, flavor and aroma hops. This beer holds a special place in our hearts at Short’s. We hope you will treasure it as much as we. Cheers!

Served on draft at the Michigan Summer Beerfest, 2010, as part of RBSG festivities. Pours a clear amber color with a thin head. Hoppy aroma with notes of peach, citrus and caramel. Very nice. The taste is bitter hops with minty and herbal notes. Medium bodied. Nice beer.

On tap at MBGSF 2010. Pours orange amber with a white head. Hoppy aroma with citrus, floral, and piney hops. Flavor is strong on the citrus hops with a medium bitterness. A nice APA, but doesn’t really have the level of hops for an IPA.

On tap at Shorts. Pours a cloudy orange with a small white head. Aroma of hop oils, lots of citrus, and grassy hops. Super hoppy aroma (with perhaps a hint of acetone?). Flavor of sweet citrus and malt with hop oils. This tastes a little stronger than 6% but is still a tasty IPA. 7/4/8/4/14 [3.7/5]

On tap. Poured a clear gold with a white head that quickly dissipated to the edge and laced beautifully. Aroma had nice pine notes with a bit of underlying caramel. Flavor began sweet with grain and a bit of caramel as the pine hops built towards the finish.

Draft @ Shorts. Pours a clear, bright orange color; creamy off-white head with excellent retention and fine-bubbled lacing; a great pour. Solid amounts of earthy and citrus bitterness in the aroma; light dried fruits and earthy maltiness underneath; a very nice, soft bitterness throughout. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: earthy and citrus hoppiness, nicely resiny and dry, with some chewy earthy maltiness and light dried fruits underneath; chewy, solid IPA. Medium finish: toasty malts, dry, crisp, with some earthy and citrus bitterness; nicely dry.

On tap at Shorts. They call it an APA brewed like an IPA and it stradles that line and could be classified as either one. But what ever its under, I enjoyed it more than their actual IPA. Pours clear copper with a beige head. The nose is so fresh. Ripe fruit, citrus, grapefruit, apples, pine, with a nice caramel backbone. Rich and abundant. Similar taste that is flavorful and delicious with a long biter finish. The flavors just meld together really well. The fresh hops and juicy fruit just pop. The best beer they had on tap.

On tap at the brewpub. I’m not sure the "Stellar Ale" brewed for Trattoria Stella in Traverse City is the same as the Stellar IIPA. This beer is described as borderline APA/IPA, so it probably is a different beer. This one: Pours a somewhat clouded orange amber, with a rim of white above. Noses strongly in a real rich citrus Amarillo glow. Mmm. Hops. Rich and piney. Flavor is hops. And only flavor. Oh this is good. Excellent hop utilization over a really mild honey-like malt. Crisp and clean. Hops are so real, right up front and fresh in grapefruit, tangerine and loblolly pine. Grassy in the backend and supported by just the right balance of malt sweetness. Rides the palate gracefully and dry. Ends crisply in peppery hop notes. Delightful!

From a growler later in the day after visiting the brewpub. Dark hazy amber body with a large lightly off white khaki head. Aroma of obvious grapefruit and grape flavored Kool Aid. This aroma is also a little bit of roasted peanut. The taste has some muted notes of peanuts and grapefruit rind. This is the least hoppy of the pales I had from Shorts. A surprisingly thin body. Decent, but a little boring. The descriptions at Shorts are kind of lacking, I would say that this is more like a mild IPA.

7-22-06 MBG. Copper with filmy white head. Huge pine up front, very resinous, not much malt detectable. Flavor much the same, huge pine resin through and through. Although there is not much for malt in the flavor profile, it’s there because there is a huge chewy mouthfeel. I guess sort of one dimensional, but I like it.
