COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Stellar Ale is a strong Pale Ale that is light orange to copper in color. It has a medium body and is well known for its hop profile. Quite pungent to the nose, this beer has esters of toasted caramel and aromas of spicy grapefruit. This beer is a complement to the fine establishment – Trattoria Stella in the Village Commons, Traverse City.

A decent pale ale with some delicious hops that provide a bitter, dry finish.

I like the gold color but the head disappears quickly. Pleasant citrus aroma. Taste is a little different than expected. It was kind of spicy bitter. Good though! Full palate. I’ll be looking to have again.

12oz bottle...outstanding clean bitter grapefruit zest peels the tastebuds off of the tongue in rapturous glory! Seriously though...this is a tasty IPA.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 11/10/2014. Pours fairly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt balance; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, floral, grass, light caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange peel, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt balance; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is an damn nice IPA style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/tropical hops and moderate pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

On tap at the brewpub. Yellow-orange pour with a white head. Citrus and some piney hops in the aroma and taste. Nice dry bitterness in the finish.

On tap at Stella. Pours a rich orange-copper with a thinner khaki head that left behind some intricate sticky lace. Nose consisted mostly of hop notes: an interesting blend of pine resin and earth with minimal fruit notes. Taste was very much bitter with hardly any sweetness. Palate was closer to medium bodied, fairly actively carbonated with a solidly bitter finish. A decent, hoppy brew focused mostly on the bittering side of hops versus the aromatics as I experienced it.

Draft at Short’s. Hazy medium orange body, thin off-white ring of carbonation. Nose of sugared citrus (grapefruit) rind. Catty, citrus rind body with emphasis on bitter grapefruit peel and next to no sweetness, backed by dry biscuity malts that take a back seat. Firm, dry, and punchy.

Adam brought back a growler of this from Michigan. Thanks! This pale ale has a clear, dark, yellow appearance. A once inch white head is perched atop the beer, and leaves a healthy amount of lacing on the glass. The Stellar Ale is a single hop pale ale, using only Amarillo Hops. The beer has a delectable aroma, and the taste follows suit. The presence of the Amarillo hops is very strong. Freshness is key with hoppy beers, and this is a fresh growler from the source. Very nice. This beer is effortless to drink, has plenty of flavor, and a clean, refreshing feel. This was a very pleasant surprise. Well done, Short’s!

Draft on tap at Brickhouse (Madison, WI). Pours a nice well hazed darker glowing amber copper hue, darker with some orange. A frothy whitish head dies to a good film, laces ok. Aromas are powerful, a lot of oranges, citrusy lemon, grass. Sweeter bread, toast, and biscuits. Initial is medium bodied offering a healthy hopping, good citrusy grapefruit, lemon, and grass. Touches of toffee, toast, and bread dough. Really lively, light, healthy hopping really keeps me going. Finish is soap, florals, grass, and grapefruit. Really dry finish keeps me pretty interested. Really liked this beer with a healthy citrusy bite and linger strong hops.

On tap at Churchkey. Served in a snifter. Pours a dark golden color with a single-finger white head and a bit of spotty lacing on the way down. The nose is indeed Amarillo all the way with some floral and citrus character. As it warms, however, it gets to be a bit catty. I’ve heard people talk about this with Amarillo beers before, though I’d never really experienced it until now. Some grain there as well. It gets extra catty and odd as it warms, particularly in the flavor and finish. A bit astringent with an odd sort of bitterness. Too bad as this was not very good and it was the one I was most looking forward to. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 06-04-2011
