Side Project Brewing is excited to announce the release of our first blended beer, an American Wild Ale named Pulling Nails. Pulling Nails will be a series of blended beers that explore the art of blending to create beers with extraordinary depth, complexity and balance. This will be labeled as Blend #1 and it is the blend of 4 unique beers, each of which add their own characteristics to the final beer.

These 4 beers are:

Spontaneous Wild (Lambic-style, native microflora from my family’s farm) - aged 25 months in French Oak White Wine (bright citric acid, mushroomy, musty)
Flanders Red - aged 18 months in American Oak Chambourcin Barrels (tart candy, robust oak, big acid, very light acetic)
Saison du Fermier - aged 9 months in American Oak Chardonnay Barrels (citrus and orchard fruit, billowy, delicate)
Saison de Rouge - aged 6 months in American Oak Chambourcin Barrels (Amarillo hopped, pear notes, 100% house Brett)

Strykzone (5391) - Wood River, Illinois, USA - JAN 3, 2015
Sampled at ESBLS. Dingy brown gold. A funky fruity aroma with oak. So much funk in the flavor. Wood, vinous notes, peaches. So much brett. The funk come down the middle but the more complex notes fill the sides of the mouth.

Lukaduke (2602) - Gray, Maine, USA - JAN 3, 2015
Bottles shared thanks to JBPortland ! Pours a hazy rust color with a finger of eggshell foam. Nose is composted fruit, saffron, earthy wet wood and some vinous acidity. Palate follows with a soft decomposed fruit base with tart vinous acidity, layers of wet grass, saffron, blood orange, toasted oak and some nice lingering tart citrus rind.

JBPortland (1116) - Portland, Maine, USA - JAN 1, 2015
750ml bottle pours toasted red brown with a finger of head. Nose is musty oak, fruit, saffron, woody funk, tart, vinous, touch of plastic. Taste is tart juicy vinous fruit and berries, some oaky leather and musty wood funk, earthy rustic grain and wet ground. Finish is tart and dry, oak, dried berries, barrel, vinous funk.

750 ml bottle to stemmed taster (shared by GAbell). Looks good; a cloudy dark apricot with very light caramel head. Smells good too; tart and funky with some fruit as well. Tastes like it smells with a semi-dry finish. Great stuff!

Shared with the crew as part of BA Cake mega trade year 2. Very acidic and tart. Incredible nose with a lot of fruit, mainly peach. High on the sour spectrum with some fruit agian in the flavors. As it warms the fruit, pear, lemon, peach, apricot come out a little more. Big and bold and really one of a kind.

Bottle shared with the crew at BSP. My first Side Project so fairly pumped. The aroma is damn near a 10 for me - funky, barnyard, peachy, white grapes, musty. The taste lends similar characteristics, but leans too much on the acidic side, so much that it takes away from some of the complexity of the various barrel aged beers in the mixture. Still quite good and will be excited to try more.

Orange pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is large brett and funk. Flavor is oaky, super acidic, and tart with a flat bitter finish. Medium body with good carbonation. nice

Bottle shared at a tasting, thanks Adam! Hazy gold amber pour with white head. Aroma is acetic, lots of cherry, lots of winey aromas, tons of oak, very mild acetone aromas. Taste is sour, very oaky, mild acetic notes, kriek, some alcohol. Palate is med bodied, med carbonation. Decent.
