By the glass at Sidra in Kyoto. Clear, pale gold color. Spicy, syrupy apple nose. Very sweet apple flavor, with just a bit of tang. Spicy cinnamon. Too sweet for me, but still very drinkable and somehow manages to be refreshing and elegant. Soft carbonation.

So I go all the way from Australia to Barcelona in search of the famous Asturian ciders, pick up a bug on the plane and spend my three-day visit in bed vomiting and staring glumly at Spanish TV. I find my first Asturian cider in a bottle shop back in Sydney. Did I miss much? Well, I doubt this represents the pinnacle of Asturian artisanship. It was very pale lemon in colour - almost Spangle yellow and rather desultory-looking for a champagne-corked cider. Precious little fizz in evidence. Nice tart fruity acids in the nose and pleasingly free of sugars, suggesting a dry customer. This particular bottle was verging on flat - there was nothing like the champagne spritz pictured here. Dud bottle? Shame because it was otherwise pretty good. Medium bodied and light in flavour. Very clean, not too sweet, with a refreshing sherbet tingle in the swallow. Good summer drinking if you can get it fresh, I should think. Ten times better than the commercial muck that clutters most Australian bottle shop shelves. (700ml bottle branded as "Sidra Escandior Extra", 4%abv)
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Choos (509) - Taylors Hill, AUSTRALIA - JUL 30, 2008
Aroma: Cidery apple with a hint of sulphur/funk. Appearance: pale yellow with just a hint of cloudiness. Flavour: mid sweet standard cider, terrific in small quantities. Palate: thin and not overly carbonated easy drinking with a lightly sweet aftertaste.

Very pale straw yellow. A very basic and unchallenging cider, but pleasant enough to drink. There’s a little funk there, but it’s fleeting and doesn’t really have much depth. Late aftertaste is of oxidised red apple. Quite quaffable, but it’s a little on the sweet side to have too much of.
