2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

As ever, San Diego’s Ballast Point looked to the sea for the inspiration behind Electric Ray. A play on the fish’s scientific name—Torpedo californica—this beer pays homage to our mutual home state, as well as to our Hop Torpedo, the source of much of the big flavor in this high voltage, hop-forward Imperial Pale Lager.

Ballast Point brought their homebrewing dreams to the big leagues and started brewing professionally, but they never forgot their roots. They still run a successful homebrewing supply shop in San Diego. A love for hops and the ocean inspire incredible brewed and distilled offerings, and their one-of-a-kind labels boast some beautiful, and sometimes gnarly-lookin’, fish.

Poured from bottle into lager glass a clear gold with some white head that thiner out but lasted till and and think lace. Aroma was muted I got a mixed citrus and some floral notes but I think the malt not the hops stood out. Plenty of co2 and bubble play. Body was a tick thicker than thin. Taste won me over the aroma or looks. It had what is call a mixed citrus that grew slightly grapefruit into the finish with a nice Carmel malt backbone with cereal and a gaining towards the finish bread note. I liked the balance of hop to malt here as I have been getting tired of some of the grapefruit bombs of late. A little pine comes through also and some bitterness that grows towards the end. Enjoyed.

Bottle poured a clear tarnished gold with a small lasting ivory head. Aromas of straw, pine, earthiness and light grapefruit. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of bread, earthiness, pine and a hint of grapefruit with a crisp dry moderatly bitter finish.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a deep copper-gold with an average size long-lasting frothy off-white head. Some lacing. Aroma of fruit, floral hops, pine notes, grain and bready malt. Flavour’s floral, fruity and a bit grassy along with a touch of alcohol and a nice grassy finish. Medium bodied. Pretty good beer.

Draft at Moriartys. Mostly clear caramel gold pour with some sift white foam. Very big hop resins with a bit of blonde malt underneath. A buttered biscuit dipped in turpentine. Yellow plums. Green grass. Meyer lemons. Honeycomb. Thyme. Numbing finish.

No strong aromas here, mild laid back ipa perfume. Looks like a darker lager, a little range brown on a pale background. Oh my, the first taste is a kick in the back if the throat followed by an alarming sensation on the tip of my tongue. Alky ball buster, and it taste like it. I’d say this is closer to the 10 percenter range here, dude. Is this what an old double ipa taste like after its aged? Wew. big giant mouth coating medicinal experience.

Clear amber with a fair white head. Malty and fruity hoppy aroma. Flavor matches. Equal parts malty and hoppy. Super balanced. Pleasant moderate bitterness. Semi-sweet. Plenty of character. Great drinkability. Excellent beer.

Deep golden with a small white head. The aroma is full of spicy, floral, and a touch of citrusy hops. There is also some clean bready pils malt. The flavor is quite malty with a strong hoppy finish. Finishes both bitter and sweet, with alot of maltiness that hides the alcohol very well.
