COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

As ever, San Diego’s Ballast Point looked to the sea for the inspiration behind Electric Ray. A play on the fish’s scientific name—Torpedo californica—this beer pays homage to our mutual home state, as well as to our Hop Torpedo, the source of much of the big flavor in this high voltage, hop-forward Imperial Pale Lager.

Ballast Point brought their homebrewing dreams to the big leagues and started brewing professionally, but they never forgot their roots. They still run a successful homebrewing supply shop in San Diego. A love for hops and the ocean inspire incredible brewed and distilled offerings, and their one-of-a-kind labels boast some beautiful, and sometimes gnarly-lookin’, fish.

Poured from bottle into lager glass a clear gold with some white head that thiner out but lasted till and and think lace. Aroma was muted I got a mixed citrus and some floral notes but I think the malt not the hops stood out. Plenty of co2 and bubble play. Body was a tick thicker than thin. Taste won me over the aroma or looks. It had what is call a mixed citrus that grew slightly grapefruit into the finish with a nice Carmel malt backbone with cereal and a gaining towards the finish bread note. I liked the balance of hop to malt here as I have been getting tired of some of the grapefruit bombs of late. A little pine comes through also and some bitterness that grows towards the end. Enjoyed.

There are enough excellent IPAs that the IPL really need not exist. But pretty good brew nonetheless

Camping with beer Camp once again, bottle. IPL with great hops, clean finish and some grapefruit in between. Another success for Sierra Nevada ’ s hop torpedo, possibly the best hop head invention since beer itself.

On draft. Hazy gold color with white head. Grapefruit, floral, grassy aroma. Another enjoyable beer from the beer camp series.

Poured from bottle into lager glass. Pours a rich gold color, light yellow head. Aroma - biscuit, floral hops. Taste - light caramel malt, resiny hops. Finish is short, resiny. Mouthfeel is surprisingly rich, and a touch oily.

Poured a clear golden color with aromas of grassy hops, light melon, some malt, and a touch of fruit. Flavors are clean grassy hops, with some malt, subtle melon light and refreshing on the palate.

Bold imperial pils with aroma and flavor that is both strong in bitterness and well balanced. Nice colors with a weighty palate and strong carbonation. Still retained that Pilsner character though.

UPDATED: MAR 15, 2015 Another winner from Beer Camp. Super classy brew. Pours a clear, rich gold. Has all the qualities that make me love the style- clean (but not particularly crisp) with the hops adding all the right bitter qualities that put it over the top. Has orange, grapefruit, pine, floral, earthy and touch of grass. Some malty sweetness balances the crispness and hops, but gravitates more towards bitter and resinous notes. In an approachable lager way. Alcohol well hidden. Very easy to sip. Slick, medium mouthfeel. Great beer all around.

Bottle split at Bruce’s, thanks to LKS, 29/01/15. Lightly hazed golden with a moderate off white swirl. Nose is caramel, melon, tangerine, straw, earthy hops. Taste comprises pale malt, straw, melon, bitter orange, peach, bitter hop tang. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close. Ok but not one I’d revisit.

Tap. Clear golden. Nice white head and bubbles. Minimal nose. Crisp with nice malt presence. Would never have guess it was an Imperial.
