2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Rich, dark, and roasty. That was the concept Bellís beer guru John Mallett aimed for and, true to Johnís vision, Maillardís Odyssey is exactly that. Its name honors the Maillard reactionóthe ďbrowningĒ of sugars and amino acidsóthat creates the wonderful caramelized toffee-like and roasted flavors so abundant in this beer.

Bellís has done a lot to raise the Midwestís craft beer bona fides. They are masters of many beer styles from their portfolio of top-notch American stouts all the way through to the alpha acid assault of their Hopslam Ale. Bellís constantly reinvents beer styles and refines recipes with artful mastery and an oddball slant.

The aroma is chocolate, molasses, roasty, very much like an impy stout. The appearance is deep black, tan head, again like a stout. The flavor is roasty, coffee, cream, bitter chocolate. The finish is roast, wood. Very good. Not sure why it isnít a stout.

Deep black pour with a huge espresso head. Aroma of chocolate and a little roasted coffee. Big full mouth. Taste is full of chocolate, toffee & caramel. Big chocolate notes dominate. The mouth is very nice and full. Slightly fruity, like dried fruit. Raisins maybe. Very complex but very tasty.

12oz. bottle. Roasty, grainy aroma of dark malts, black bread, cocoa and faint toffee, some earthy hop appearing as well. Dark brown-black in color with a lasting, fine, khaki head and excellent lacing. Flavor profile is comprised of full, dark, roasty malt flavors, plenty of dark chocolate and bready overtones, with background notes of dark caramel, light to moderate hop bitterness and some mildly woody, earthy touches late. Smooth and creamy on the palate, effervescence is very fine, and with a relatively full body and just a hint of warmth. This was really nice, sort of an amped-up, less hoppy American Stout.

[Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy light-brown head. Decent amount of lacing. Aroma of toasty caramel malt, nuts, dark fruit, alcohol, chocolate and a hint of hops. Flavour is malty and nutty along with a bit of alcohol, some coffee, chocolate and a moderate bitter finish. Alcohol is there but fairly well hidden. Medium bodied. Enjoyable, I quite liked it.

Bottle courtesy of GT2. Pours blackish brown with a mocha head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, moist soil, oatmeal and liquorice. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, dark roast coffee, salty liquorice, burnt wood, resin and moist soil. Mouthfeel is soft, round, velvety, tiny roasted astringent and near full bodied. finish is tiny sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, resin, dark roast coffee, moist soil and hints of grapefruit rinds. Very elegantÖ

(Bottle) Pours dark brown to black with a brown head. The aroma holds toffee, chocolate, soft liquorice, dark berries/black currant jam, dark bread, balanced resinous hops and a touch of vanilla. The flavour is light sweet and medium bitter. Balanced roast and hops alongside soft toffee and a touch of vanilla. The mouthfeel is soft with a light carbonation. Balanced finish with a light acidic touch. Medium bodied.

12 oz. bottle from a Beer Camp pack purchased at Dutchís. Last one! Itís been a good, interesting pack overall, mostly in the 3.5-3.8 range for me. This one might be the best looking of the bunch, but Iím a sucker for a deep, dark, pretty much opaque brown with a big, frothy tan head that laces the glass. Thereís some mahogany around the edges that suggests this isnít quite imperial stout-thick. Aroma of dark and milk chocolate, tobacco, coffee, oats, roasted brown sugar, and toasted nuts. Flavor of coffee, dark chocolate, tobacco, earth, burnt toast, toasted brown sugar, toffee, and cacao. Medium-bodied, with an earthy mouthfeel that finishes roasty. Moderate carbonation. This could be a little better, but it has a sort of dirty water kind of note in there, as well- like a deep, damp earthy note that I canít quite pin down. Still a very good beer overall and another interesting addition to this pack.

One of the best in the bunch! Just as the description says, it is rich dark and roasty. Pours a deep dark brown. Aromas of roasted malt permeate. Flavor matches the aroma profile. Finishes slightly sweet, slightly warming.

From the box dated 6/19/14, this was poured into a snifter since its an American Strong Ale. The appearance was a nice looking black color with a one finger white to off white foamy head that concaves a bit to leave some light speckled lacing here and there around the body. The smell had a nice roasty and somewhat earthy chocolate inside of a light dark fruitiness, somewhat plum-like and a light vanilla. The taste was extremely roasty and sweet (very inviting, makes me want to pound this long and hard on a cold winterís night), however, Iím actually sipping it for the most part. On the palate, thereís a fairly decent sticky sweet dark fruity aftertaste leading into a dry finish and coming across as more of a sipper, weird because thereís a part of me that wanted to pound this long and hard on a cold winterís night - hmmm....I may take that back. Iíd say its about a medium on the body. Overall, this was a wonderful offering by Sierra Nevada and Bellís that if this was brewed again, I know I would have.
