LIFE - this living ale is naturally carbonated to enhance complexity, refinement, and to encourage aging. LIMB - for the birch and maple trees, who’s syrup gives this unique ale its flavor and symbolizes the collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head. We are proud to share our Life and Limb with it’s thousands of other branches who collectively comprise the craft brewing family tree. Sip slowly with friends and loved ones; savor long - because one could do better than be a swigger of birches.

Pour is a dark brown/deep ruby color with a fluffy khaki head. Sweet smelling, a lot of wood coming up front, caramel, maple syrup, slightly boozy, toffee, toasted malt, and maybe a hint of pine. Still getting lots of wood on the taste, lots of caramel and maple, subtle chocolate notes, dark fruits, there’s definitely some birch there, and a light roasted coffee taste on the end. Nice dry finish. This is one of the first beers I’ve had that I aged for awhile, and I think it turned out great. Nothing drastically different from what I remember (from 2 years ago), just slightly mellowed and it seems more woody than I remember.

Bottle of 2011 L&L #2. A: Chocolatey, nutty, rich, though overall a mild scent. (My bottle is sort of cold.) A: Black, almost obsidian. Sticks to the glass. Pile of foam fades quickly, thin layer lingers. T: Chocolate, malty. A year really calmed down the alcoholic note. O: Great maple/birch dark ale---and, moreover, benefits from age. Stick this one in the closet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Review #500 in honor of my 1st son, born on 7/4/12. Batch 2 - 750ml served into a 22oz snifter glass. A - Pours a very dark brown with a khaki micro bubble head forming a thick tight knit creamy cap. S - Rich toffee, sweet maple, roasted barley, woody undertones, chocolate, muted pine sap, toasted marshmallows, sugar alcohol fumes, caramelized plantains, cherry-like fruit esters, molasses, dates, oranges come out as it warms. T - A complex mix of roasted barley and sweet chocolate malt, toasted bread and toffee, spiced plumbs, dates, wood is very present and blends well with the spicy hops. Finishing roasty and spicy. M - Heavy but light and super creamy across the tongue. Incredible feel. Warming. One of the more complex American Strong Ales I’ve had. A master blend of balancing flavors. Its sweet without being cloying. Excellent use of ingredients. Really no flaws. An awesome sipper. Wish I had another one to age. Serving type: bottle 07-15-2012

Significantly sweet nose with coffee and dark chocolate making a presence. A little bit of a woody character too. It's a really dark beer with a decent 1/4in head and nice lacing. The maple syrup kicks in well at the end of the taste creating a nice mouth coating. I like the bitterness right at the end. It has a hoppy feel. A coppery metallic feel as well. Interesting beer. Very complex and lots happening. Wish I had more bottles to age and compare! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Version #2, on tap @ Brouwers. Pours deep, ruby tinged brown with a thin creamy head that fades quickly. Aroma is huge fruity tart sweetness. Taste is thin charred malt, medium vanilla and caramel sweetness, notes of chocolate, oak, fig, and a bit of molasses. Mouthfeel somewhat thin. This keg has to be a bit old, maybe that’s why the maple flavor has mellowed so much? The flavors have definitely melded with age, but I dunno this just doesn’t balance quite right for me. Still a tasty treat and rare enough to merit grabbing whenever you come across it.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled 6/29/2011. Pours fairly clear extremely dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of raisin, toffee, molasses, toast, biscuit, wood, chocolate, maple, clove, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt notes with well balanced wood notes. Taste of raisin, toast, toffee, chocolate, dark bread, wood, maple, molasses, light clove, roasted malt, slight char, and roasted earthiness. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of toffee, toast, raisin, chocolate, maple, molasses, dark bread, roasted malt, light clove, slight char, and earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of malt flavors with wood notes; with light hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an excellent strong ale! Great balance and complexity of malt flavor and wood aging; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.
